Originally six of them,
Jurassic 5 got everything else right on their self-titled debut EP. Part of the new rap underground of the late '90s, J5 came together in 1993 at the Los Angeles cafe/venue named the Good Life. At the tail end of 1997, they released their self-titled EP on the group's independent imprint and sold an astounding 300,000 copies worldwide. They followed with one hell of a shotgun blast of an album (and their first original major label release) Quality Control, followed by Power in Numbers. It was hailed by critics as one of the freshest debuts of the year (if not the decade). Jurassic 5 earned new fans, many outside of hip-hop, by playing some unconventional venues including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and the Warped Tour. On the heels of a busy three-year hiatus, Emcees Chali 2na, Marc 7, Akil, Zaakir (Soup), and DJ/producer Nu-Mark are on the march once again, displaying those qualities for which J5 is now world renowned on their provocative fourth album, Feedback, released in July 2006.
www.myspace.com/jurassic5 Self-styled purveyor of 'percussive wet funk',
Timo Maas is the producer and remixer of more than 85 productions in three years. He has DJ'ed everywhere from Germany's 'Love Parade' to London's 'Turnmills' and Chicago's 'Karma'. Timo is a man with a mission, a man sick of the "cheesy shit" that clogs up the clubs and the charts, stifling creativity. Meanwhile Timo's remixes have been garnering acclaim from all quarters. And so if you've set foot inside a niterie recently, the chances are you'll have boogied to one of this man's productions.
www.myspace.com/timomaas The undisputed 'Godfather of Noyze'
Rahzel has re-defined the beat box. A self-defined 'vocal percussionist' he has perfectly mastered this quintessential hip hop art form and has emerged as a true virtuoso. To hear him is to be converted. Rahzel is best known as a member of The Roots, hip hop's cutting-edge live band. Over the past several years he has emerged as the one to watch. A glance at Rahzel's musical influences speaks to his appreciation for the art of making music. He draws from the line of Doug E. Fresh/Biz Markie, of Bobby McFerrin, and of Al Jarreau.

Nightmares On Wax, soul was always a latent force. But there comes a time when raw energies like this can no longer be smothered by technological trickery. Eventually after a four year hiatus, NMOW's soul blasted through their synthetic sediment. Leeds-based Waxer George Evelyn's infatuation with hip hop enticed him to join a local breakdance crew where he forged an alliance with fellow b-boy Kevin Harper. From the landmark 90's album Carboot Soul to the latest In A Sound outta Time, NMOW have been in a league of their own for creating the deepest, Hip-Hop, Dub & Soul hybrid that is perfectly suited to a summer's afternoon in park. One aspect which has definitely changed is NMOW's use of live musicians. George is now joined by a guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, singer and rapper. It is all part of his plan for NMOW to operate like a band rather than a studio act.
www.myspace.com/inaspaceouttasound Like all the best creative teams,
Cassius are a duo. The pair, Philippe Zdar grew up in the Alps while Hubert (Boombass) is Parisian, isn't exactly short on gilt-edged production skills and musical ability either. When it comes to funky music, Cassius have pedigree coming out of their well-trimmed ears. For the last decade, they've made some of the sweetest music, produced a portfolio of house, hip hop and leftfield music with more high-fat content than foie gras on toast, travelled their heavyweight sound across the world and spend ten years building Paris a name to rival London, Detroit, Chicago and New York when it comes to show-stopping records. In combination they're among the most successful outfits currently operating both in France and in the global house music demi-monde. They returned to a home studio in Ibiza which lifted the two musicians' morale, as revealed by '15 Again'. This new album released in September, with its near-manifesto of a title, is in sync with the homemade, garage sensibility of today's youth.
www.myspace.com/cassius15again The ultimate scratch master and undisputed king of humour-injected hip-hop
DJ Yoda released his long awaited debut album, 'The Amazing Adventures of DJ Yoda', in October this year. DJ Yoda is one of Britain's most admired and original DJs, having built a reputation as the only DJ to single-handedly inject humour into UK hip-hop. Admired for his originality as well as his sense of fun, he is possibly the only DJ in the world who can fill a club cutting George Formby with Jurassic 5, or 80's pop with New York rap. Yoda represents a new brand of mix-master who will play any kind of music to make people dance - with a hip-hop set that can take the audience from underground rap to TV themes, to nursery rhymes, country, soul, reggae, drum and bass, 80's pop and back again.
www.myspace.com/djyodauk One of the very few DJ's in recent years that has stood out and caught the ear of some of the worlds largest DJs is
Desyn Maseillo. With many established DJs and nucomer DJs leaning towards a particular style and musical range many are pigeon holed into a genre of music. Desyn, however, has managed to establish his own sound that crosses boundaries and makes difficult to categorize incorporating house classics, deep, tech, funky and progressive in his sets. Desyn's DJ career all began with 1 mix CD that he took a considerable amount of time and love preparing, he sent it out to 100 random people that requested the CD from a post that Desyn put out onto various Internet message boards. The CD made such an impression that Desyn, although completely unknown at the time began to get international gig requests. From his first international gigs to his chaotic schedule today; it all sparked off from that one mix CD!
www.myspace.com/desynmasielloDJ Dan is a DJ for the people, burning up dance floors around world has just been named the number one house DJ in the world by DJ mag. His international profile expanded exponentially with the release of the groundbreaking "Loose Caboose" by the Electroliners, a classic track he co-wrote and co-produced with Jim Hopkins. It was soon picked up by XL Records in the U.K., which led to a fruitful partnership between Dan and famed DJ Carl Cox. Long before annual surveys of the world's favourite DJs, dance music lovers had already spoken, loud and clear, in favor of DJ Dan. From his rise through the early '90s Los Angeles scene, to his non-stop international agenda today, Dan has continued to thrill audiences wherever he goes. DJ Dan remains a towering figure in the world of dance music, always a step ahead in bringing new musical styles to his fans.
www.myspace.com/djdanmusicThe
Fort Knox Five have had a huge impact on the international funk and breaks scene over the past couple of years. With the release of five critically acclaimed singles on their own independent label, Fort Knox Recordings, the FK5 have been thrust into the spotlight and caught the attention of music lovers around the world. Fort Knox 5 were recently the tour DJ's on Gwen Stafani's Harajuku Lovers tour of the US and have remixed for artists such as Tito Puente, Louis Armstrong, A Skillz and Krafty Kuts, Mo'Horizons and Afrika Bambaataa.
www.myspace.com/fortknoxfiveAlso on Thievery Corporations label ESL,
Thunderball have been building a solid following over three artist albums with their unique blend of Blaxploitation Funk, Cinematic Soul, Bossa Nova Lounge, Downtempo Dub, and Jazzy Drum'n'Bass. Steve Raskin is a founding member of both Fort Knox Five and Thunderball and will be playing back to back with FK5's main man Jon Horvath.
www.myspace.com/thunderballdcThe man behind
Ursula 1000 is none other than the mild mannered, multi-instrumentalist Alex Gimeno. Based in New York City, Alex's style evolved and transitioned from the sophisticated & hip background score provided by his father, a renowned member of the 50's Latin orchestra, Los Chavales De Espana, to the heady rock, punk, disco, funk and electronic dance music of his generation. Alex smoothly moves back and forth between musical styles from the glamorous Jet Set era to frenetic electronica. Alex cannot be boxed in, categorized or labelled; his music is a multi-levelled eclectic blend of styles and genres. Ursula's has just released his new studio album entitled, Here Comes Tomorrow, where he explores a mind meld of electro, latin, swing, ska, bossa nova hip hop, psychedelia and glam rock.
www.myspace.com/ursula1000 London Elektricity has become a byword for groundbreaking 'fast soul music', ramming venues, destroying drum & bass crowds, leaving huge smiles from the Big Chill to Glastonbury and beyond, London Elektricity Live has always been out of this world. Flip the script again in 2006. Tony LE is back behind the decks with sets from London to Japan to Malaysia, Australia, California, Eastern Europe an onwards. Tony also keeps it cutting edge as always by bringing you the groundbreaking "Hospital Podcast". This regular show, available through iTunes, is smashing up the bandwidth as people subscribe from Canada to Cape Town. Tony will be joined at the festival by MC Wrec.
www.myspace.com/londonelektricityCicada comprises of Aaron Gilbert (also known as Mr Natural), Alex Payne, and Icelandic vocalist, Heidrun Bjornsdottir (formerly of Gloss and 4ADS Gus Gus). Alex and Aaron have a wealth of experience in producing, making music, and running labels. Both were born out of the electronic scene, but with an equal dislike of musical boundaries - hence their cross-genre forays. They released their debut album this year, utilising live instruments and old skool synths - moogs, Junos, Jupiters and Linn drums as well as guitars, Cicada has a sound all of its own.
www.myspace.com/cicada1Kraak and Smaak is the ever so slightly illegal sounding band of Dutchmen Mark Kneppers, Oscar De Jong and Wim Plug. Mark and Wim already knew each other from DJ'ing together and were introduced to Oscar by a mutual friend who told them about the keyboard prodigy that was studying at the conservatoire. The trio started working together and sent one of their earliest efforts into the outside world to see if anyone was interested - That track Money in the Bag was picked up by Jalapeno Records who offered the band an album deal. K&S made some serious inroads into the UK when DJ magazine made Boogie Angst (their debut album) their album of the month and devoted a spread to the super strength Dutch funk crew declaring Boogie Angst "One of the years best albums". For many people Kraak and Smaak is an addiction that's hard to shake and when you're talking about the funk phenomenon from the Netherlands that has been winning over audiences across the continent with their energy charged live shows the same is definitely true.
www.myspace.com/kraaksmaak Dan Whitford, Tim Hoey (guitar/bass/keys), Mitchell Scott (drums) and Bennett Foddy (bass/keys) joined together to make the
Cut Copy sound what it is today - scuzzy disco, post-post-punk, electric lovers rock, sweet space pop. A sound that references 70's rock staples like ELO and Fleetwood Mac, late 80's/early 90's indie like Sonic Youth and Guided By Voices, the disco production of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, post-punk and French house. Bennett took a leave of absence and the outfit was streamlined down to a 3-piece mid-2004. Since Bright Like Neon Love's release in Australia, Cut Copy have gone on to sell out shows nationally, play the festival circuit, appear on the Kitsune Midnight compilation, and more recently support Mylo on his 12 day UK tour. The music of Cut Copy is like rediscovering lost memories and hearing the sound of the future both at the same time; let it light up your life.
