How did FFF start?
The Flake Film Festival (FFF) began as a tribute to young Jindabyne local, Blake McGrath (17), who was sadly killed in a snowboarding accident at Perisher Blue in 2001.
This year FFF was awarded an Australia Day Council Certificate of Appreciation for Community Event of the Year.
Festival founders Anthony "Chook" Trovatello (24) and Rachel Forsyth (28) started the festival in winter of 2003 on a budget of $0 (nil). "The festival was only possible through a lot of hard work, community support, donations of prizes and resources, and a bit of luck!" says Chook.
Last year's festival screened 14 short films, featuring a variety of styles such as documentary, animation, drama and comedy. Screenings were held in Thredbo and Jindabyne. The audience was given the prestigious job of judging the winners across all categories.
Each year with money raised at screenings, FFF awards a Blake McGrath Tribute Award and a snow scholarship to a nominated young person of the Snowy Mountains. "Blake is sadly missed, but through the festival and scholarship his spirit lives and rides on each year- something he loved to do", says Rachel.
This year Flake Film Festival returns, and organisers promise lots of exciting things ahead. So keep an eye out for more info soon!
