Behind Closed Doors' in 2004
Take a peek behind the closed doors of some of Melbourne's most diverse properties

Following the outstanding success of the launch of 'Open Heritage: Behind Closed Doors' in 2003, The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) is delighted to launch the program again in 2004.

Open Heritage: Behind Closed Doors provides the opportunity for the public to take a peek behind the closed doors of some of Victoria's most significant private buildings and properties.

In March, the National Trust, in collaboration with a range of inner city properties, will offer Victorians the opportunity to discover the hidden and often overlooked places and spaces within our city centre. While the focus was on historical sites in 2003, March's Open Heritage: Behind Closed Doors program will emphasise the diverse architectural and cultural heritage of the City of Melbourne, with properties dating from 1875 to 2002. Each property has been selected for its architectural, social, cultural or historical significance.

"This program highlights the rich fabric of our city, from the dungeons of the Supreme Court to the dance space at Chunky Move. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience & discover the exciting properties that form Melbourne's history", explains Georgina Stayches, Events Coordinator, National Trust.

Highlights include the opportunity to view the rarely seen official residence of Sir George Verdon, who was the General Manager of the ES&A Bank. Built in the 1880's and located in the ANZ Verdon Chambers of the Gothic Bank, the rooms exhibit the opulence and extravagance that resulted in the building costing more than 40,000 pounds above the allocated building budget!

The public will also have a chance to discover, through a series of talks, the history and design of the elegant former BHP House. The building was designed to showcase steel in building construction and remains one of Melbourne's most sophisticated office towers.

A general pass of $35.00 (or $30.00 for National Trust members) provides access to Chunky Move, The CUB Malthouse, Supreme Court of Victoria, Tasma Terrace and the former Cabinet Room - no. 2 Treasury Place. For an additional cost of $6.00, special guided tours and talks will be offered at Trades Hall, Former BHP House, ANZ Verdon Chambers and Chunky Move/ACCA (free).

Open Heritage: Behind Closed Doors will take place on Sunday 14 March 2004 from 10am to 4.30pm. The Open Heritage program will continue in April on the Mornington Peninsula and May in Geelong.
