Two Australian plays that were critically acclaimed in Australia last year have been accepted into the New York International Fringe Festival and will head to the big apple later this year.
Holiday In The Sun and Sorry ... (I Love You) are both written and produced by Australians and will merge their casts for the New York trip.
Suzanne Mackay, who co-wrote Sorry ... (I Love You) and stars in both plays, says the entire company are excited about the venture.
"It's going to be a remarkable experience for us all. We never could have imagined that we'd be heading overseas with these plays, especially to New York," Ms Mackay said.
"Both of the plays made a great impact on the independent theatre scene last year and we're expecting New York audiences to love it just as much."
Before heading to New York, Sorry ... (I Love You) will appear the Belvoir Street Theatre in Sydney for just two performances, giving those who missed the play a chance to catch it before it heads overseas.
"We're presenting the Sydney shows just weeks before the New York opening night," Ms Mackay said.
"It's a great opportunity for everyone to see the show and gives us a chance to do a full run before we open in New York."
Sorry ... (I Love You) is a show that combines theatre, cabaret and movement. It is about life, and the inevitable 'love'. It is about getting together, breaking up, mothers, family, friends and how all can drive you so crazy that you find yourself needing to eat your body weight in chocolate biscuits.
Holiday In The Sun is a black comedy of a ghostly revenge that explores the concept of time, memory and identity as dark deeds of the past come back to haunt two friends in a lonely deserted beach house.
Sorry ... (I Love You) plays at the Belvoir Street Theatre (upstairs) on July 26 and August 2, 2004. Tickets are $27/$22 with $5 of each ticket donated to the Cancer Council of NSW. Bookings:02 9699 3444. Holiday In The Sun plays at the venue on August 9 for one performance only.
