How did it feel to hear your song played on a CD and on the airwaves?
Laura Imbruglia: I remember the first time I heard one of my songs recorded properly with backing vocals and other instruments on it. It put a massive smile on my face, same thing with airplay. These days I'm so jaded I just don't care… Kidding! Sort of…
Did you have any pre-conceived ideas about the music industry?
Laura Imbruglia: No, I've been around it since I was in high school from going to various do's for my sister's music. I saw the good and bad side of the music industry very quickly.
Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?
Laura Imbruglia: I sure do. Love, life, death, friends and general angst inspire me and cicadas and Freddie Mercury.
What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?
Laura Imbruglia: Queen, Bob Dylan & The Carpenters are my staple music diet. I always go back to them. However I love lots of country music like Loretta Lynn, The Louvin Bros, Hank Williams, Flying Burrito Brothers then more modern country like Gillian Welch & Neko Case. I also love Black Sabbath, Nirvana, Cheap Trick, Ramones, and Alice Cooper...anything that makes me feel something. I like a good melody, riff, guitar solo, vocal harmony or middle 8 ending with a key-change chorus.
What's next? Tour/Album/Single?
Laura Imbruglia: I have a show on December 19 2009 at Spectrum in Sydney. It will be my only Australian show to launch my new single "When It All Falls Apart", which you can download free from
www.lauraimbruglia.com. My new album comes out in Feb 2010 and is called "The Lighter Side Of..." (End plug).
Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?
Laura Imbruglia: I always contemplate throwing in the towel. It's a very expensive hobby, this music schmozzle. And sometimes it feels like I'm just doing it for my own enjoyment. If I know other people are enjoying it, then it's easier to keep thinking of making and releasing music in the future. I don't wanna be one of those Mums who set up a PA in a food court and sing their lungs out whilst people dig through their buffet meals. I have no children yet but if that happens in the future, please kill me.
Do you prefer performing live or recording?
Laura Imbruglia: A bit of both. Recording can be extremely stressful and I get very down and grumpy when things don't work. I guess the same thing can happen if I have a bad show. Let's say both. Playing live gives you a bigger buzz if you have a great show though.
What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Laura Imbruglia: I'm unsure. Maybe Nirvana. I was really into them in high school. But look what the music industry did to poor Kurt...
What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?
Laura Imbruglia: People judging me negatively based on my surname without giving me a proper chance. Unwanted press attention due to my surname...
What's a typical day like?
Laura Imbruglia: I get up and go to work. I work at a vinyl pressing plant. We make vinyl records. You know, like in the old days before CDs. It's a pretty cool job. Then I go home and get on the internet or play guitar. A typical day is boring, let's talk about Xmas day! I get up and eat avocado & tomato on toast. Then I and my family open the pressies. Then we have a MASSIVE feast. Then we all feel content and bloated. The end.
What has been your favorite part of becoming a music artist?
Laura Imbruglia: Free beer and meeting new friends.
If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?
Laura Imbruglia: Stephin Merritt.
Are you single? What do you look for in a partner?
Laura Imbruglia: Nope. Someone with honesty & a sense of humour.
Do you have a website fans can visit?
Laura Imbruglia: Yes,
www.lauraimbruglia.com.
Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life?
Laura Imbruglia: Good, true friends
Laughter
Vegetables
Good music, films, books & art
Karaoke
What message would you like to say to your fans?
Laura Imbruglia: Please buy my albums. Downloading is crappy and negatively affects the artist you're a 'fan' of. PLUS my albums come with interesting artwork and liner notes which are un-downloadable.
