Melbourne neo-soul artist, Maddy Herbert has been playing and releasing velvety smooth jazz and soul songs with lush alt-pop undertones as Velvet Bloom since first flooring the scene with her debut single 'You' in 2018. Since then the rising artist has released seven singles including the 2019 favourite 'Teach Ya' which won Listen Up Music Org's national competition for Songs That Heal. Her latest aptly titled single 'Run' is the first taste of an upcoming debut EP that is sure to propel Velvet Bloom to the forefront of Melbourne's thriving soul scene with its silken melodies and honeyed vocals.
Out via Cousin Will Records, 'Run' sees Velvet Bloom harnessing an innate ability to speak directly to the soul with her smokey vocals rich in timbre and instantly captivating. 'Run' is a gently swaying ballad that builds to immense heights with Herbert's layered vocals sounding as if they've been plucked straight out of 1960s New York. With Maddy fronting guitar and vocals, the single features the seasoned musicianship of Alex Marko (Lead Guitar, Synth & Keys), Anthony Rennick (Bass), Nic Morton (Drums, Percussion), with additional performances from Yara Alkurd & Quin Grunden. 'Run' was co-produced by Maddy, Alex and Quin, and mixed by Edvard Hakansson with mastering by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering.
"I remember writing this track during the second COVID lockdown in 2020, restrictions were harsh and 'Run' was one of the first songs that I could fully resonate with after a creative lull. Sometimes, risks can be scary and the fear of sacrificing what you already have for something uncertain can cause inner turmoil. 'Run' is about overcoming those fears and leaning into the unknown with excitement." – Velvet Bloom
Performing both solo and in various incarnations with her band The Vito Collective, Velvet Bloom has been a part of four tours and supported countless musicians in the project's short time on the scene. Some notable acts that Velvet Bloom has performed with include the likes of Great Gable, Dulcie, Death By Denim, The Mamas, The Grogans, Zoe Fox And The Rocket Clocks, Teenage Dads and Kim Churchill. Last year, frontwoman and brainchild Maddy Herbert was chosen to partake in the MIME mentoring program through Boxhill Institute and was mentored by soul powerhouse, Kylie Auldist. Now, the fruits of their labour have birthed the wondrous sonic bliss that is the oozing honey pot, 'Run'.
