The Blackmores Road to Healthy Conception

Well, we've made the decision everyone - in a few months, Jason and I are going to try and have a baby. The only thing is, none of my friends have kids so I can't ask them for advice - and I don't know anything about this stuff. So, I've had to turn to Google for advice, and today, I thought I'd share my top preconception finds with you all.

Vitamins For Her
Now, I knew there was lots of information around about taking vitamins before I started trying to conceive, but I had no idea which vitamins I should take. I thought about taking an everyday multivitamin, and then I discovered that companies actually make special formulas for people trying to conceive. One of the first products that came up as I Googled was Blackmores Conceive Well Gold, described as a preconception care formula which supplies the essential nutrients, including iodine, needed for healthy conception and pregnancy.

This sounded right up my alley - but why was iodine singled out? Well, iodine is important for healthy brain development of the baby - a fact I discovered at iodine.blackmores.com.au and also in a recent blog on the Blackmores website.

Vitamins For Him
So I was all sorted in the vitamin department. But what about Jason? According to Dr. Google, the health of the male is just as important as the health of the female when you're trying to conceive. Who knew?

Specifically the sperm membrane is highly sensitive to oxidative stress caused by free radicals. Antioxidants may help protect against the damage that oxidative stress can cause, so it may be useful for guys to take a multivitamin with plenty of antioxidants before trying to conceive.

When I Googled men's multivitamins, I found Blackmores Men's Performance Multi - which, according to the label, may help protect against free radical damage and supports a healthy reproductive system and production of healthy sperm. It also has a host of nutrients to help men perform at their peak, both mentally and physically, everyday.

Tracking Your Fertility
Here's the big eye-opener: you're only fertile for a few days, each month. When we're in sex education classes at school, we're always made to feel that it's so easy to fall pregnant, in actual fact, everything needs to be perfect in your body, and it can be pretty hard for some women - particularly those with irregular cycles.

I, like many women on the path to pregnancy, had no idea when my "fertile days" are, but luckily I found this great Ovulation Calendar on the Blackmores website in their Pregnancy Community. It will tell me when I'm ovulating (i.e. when my best chances are of conceiving) - and it's totally free!

Online Support From Others
Speaking of the Blackmores Pregnancy Community, I found that in addition to pregnancy tools, the community is also home to a lively bunch of other women who are trying to conceive and are already pregnant - so if I ever have a any questions, about anything, I now know where to go to ask other owmen who are in the same boat, as I am.
