Swim Strong In The Fertility Race

Think virility is the bee all and end all of making a baby? Think again! It's fertility over virility that will help you win the race and the health and motility of the sperm is paramount, according to scientists.

Published in the Journal of Urology, the study involving 228 men with unexplained sperm problems contributing to infertility, including poor sperm numbers, low movement and abnormally shaped sperm were treated in a double blind, placebo controlled, randomised study using the supplement, Ubiquinol.

Statistics reveal that about eight per cent of men seek help for infertility. One in six couples in Australia and New Zealand suffer infertility and more than a third of men aged over 40 years report having one or more reproductive health problems, all being more common amongst older men.

Principal of Health Schools Australia, Nutritionist and Naturopath, Stephen Eddey said the 26-week trial proved that ubiquinol may help support healthy sperm.

'Ubiquinol is a powerful antioxidant and is present at high levels in sperm and protects sperm cells from damage and additionally plays a role in sperm cell energy production and motility" Eddey said.

Ubiquinol, the active and reduced form of Coenzyme Q10, has shown to be effective in improving the sperm quality of infertile men, according the study.

'On average there are at least 20 million or more sperm per mL. Anything less can lower fertility rates. The study found that ubiquinol significantly improved sperm count in more than 62 per cent of men" says Eddey.

The men in the study had experienced infertility of more than two years and had abnormal sperm count and motility, according to World Health Organisation criteria.

Eddey states that 'the number of mobile sperm also increased significantly in 57 per cent of participants.

'The percentage of normally shaped sperm also improved in 52 per cent of men who took ubiquinol as compared to placebo.

'The study demonstrates that ubiquinol supplementation helps support semen parameters in infertile men" says Eddey.
