Stars interview with Lark

Stars interview with Lark

How would you describe your music?

I would describe my music as happy and uplifting with catchy hooks and relatable lyrics. I mainly write pop songs, but I occasionally venture into dance territory!

What was the inspiration behind your new single
"Stars"?

I actually wrote "Stars" for myself. It's about my journey and a reminder to stay focused and keep in the game. As an indie artist, mother and wife with a full-time job, my life is a juggling act but every day, I'm inspired to keep creating. And when it's showtime and those stage lights come on, it's magic! Take me to the stars!!

What are your musical influences?

I actually pay homage to Madonna and Olivia Newton John in the music video for "Stars," they were two of my biggest musical influences when I was growing up. I'm also a big fan of glitz and glam so I love KISS, plus they write the catchiest songs. I'm also influenced by any songs that touch me in some way, it doesn't matter the genre or artist. I also love a good one hit wonder - they're some of the best songs!

Do you prefer performing live or recording?

I like both for different reasons but there is no feeling like performing live. When you're in the pocket and the crowd is right there with you every step of the way, it's perfection, and my ultimate happy place.

What should we expect from your upcoming music video?

My music videos generally tell a story with a start, middle and end. This music video is a bit different as it's a celebration of my love for vintage Hollywood glamour, mid-80's Madonna, Olivia Newton John in her Xanadu era and 80's synth-pop modern fashion. I'm so grateful to my music video producer, Dave Molland and the team for making it a visual feast. I hope people like it!

What motivates you most when writing music?

Just the idea of creating something new, from the initial spark to the end product with all the supporting visuals really motivates me. In fact, I had a production session today and I am loving this new song so much, even in its early stages, that I am super motivated to finish it as quickly as I can!

Which music/artists are you currently listening to?

I think that for at least the remainder of 2024, it will be be summer of Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter. They are amazing songwriters and performers. I'm loving Sabrina's cheeky style and the hints of Kate Bush that are coming through in Chappell Roan's song, "Good Luck, Babe"! I'm also making an effort to discover and support other indie artists who aren't in the charts but are making great music.

What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

I honestly can't remember a time when I didn't love music or want to be a singer. I always had headphones on, listening to music when I was a kid, dreaming of writing songs and performing. I was very fortunate to be able to make it a reality from a young age, fresh out of school.

If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

I am currently obsessed with Empire of the Sun - they're like a magical unicorn and I'd love to see what we could create.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the music industry?

Trying to get my music heard by the masses is a real challenge. Previously, the only avenue was through a record label. Now you don't need a label to release music, but the market is so saturated due to the sheer volume of music that is being released every day. I have no control over it so I'll just keep on making the best music that I can!

What's next, for you?

I'm off to Atlanta, Georgia to walk the red carpet for the 2024 International Singer Songwriters Awards for which I'm a finalist in six categories. After "Stars," I'm releasing another single in October and then another 2 or 3 singles are on the cards for the first half of 2025. I'd love to land some sync placements in film and tv and write for other artists, as well as creating my own music. I also really need to put a show together, I will have enough of my own songs to be able to do that early next year so I'm really excited about that!

"I was going through a bit of a hard time, and I felt like I was just working the daily grind and trying to get ahead when all I really wanted to do was work on my music," Lark explains. "I wrote this song to myself as a wake-up call to snap out of it, refocus on what fills my soul, and get out there and do it. My producer, Jono, and I finished the production in record time, it flowed so easily. This song is a whole vibe, and it makes me so happy and inspired!" Lark uses the imagery of space and the stars to symbolize the vastness of her aspirations and the limitless possibilities of her dreams. The celestial theme in her music evokes a sense of wonder and inspiration, encouraging listeners to reach for the stars and pursue their own goals without limits. Lark explodes from her contrasting bridge to show her readiness to break free from the shackles of the traditional 9 to 5 work life. Expertly crafted, this song was produced by Jono Fernandez, known for his projects with Sia and Morgan Page.
