Sian Evans Cold Feet Interview

2015 was a big year for Cairns come Brisbane based singer / songwriter Sian Evans. Heading out as a solo artist after 3 years touring the country and releasing records with her trio The Rusty Datsuns, she was nominated as a finalist in the Toyota Star Maker competition at Tamworth Country Music Festival in January and released her -How Time Has Treated Thee' EP in June, a release that saw lead single -Take Me Home' added to national rotation on ABC local radio.

In October, Evans hit Josh Schuberth's Love Hz studios in Sydney with Gareth Mewes (Fiddle) and Michael Haydon (Percussion) to record her latest single - -Cold Feet'. Out Sat Feb 27th through Beanstalk Records -Cold Feet' is a breathy, rollicking, pop country ditty about the nature of, in Sian's words 'cut and run self-sabotage behaviour". Auspiciously, the track has already been nominated as a finalist in the 2016 Queensland Music Awards, the results of which will be announced Mon March 21st in Brisbane.

Interview with Sian Evans

Question: What was the main inspiration behind Cold Feet?

Sian Evans: I was in a sore sorry state. I'd re-run old tapes/patterns only to really learn they REALLY were no longer serving me as I further stepped into womanhood. Sometimes you need to break or lose something to really discover it's true value.

Question: What should we expect from the upcoming tour?

Sian Evans: Music foremostly. Some fairly awkward onstage banter explanatory of my introverted nature aware that people are probably staring at me, and a set of doc martens on my feet at every show.

Question: Do you write your own songs? What's your inspiration?

Sian Evans: I do write most of my own songs yes. They are inspired by life, my philosophical or sentimental attachments to them often, and sometimes I just ramble write and the words become significant at a later date.

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Sian Evans: I haven't really been listening to any of late. I suppose I'm feeling kind of music'd out. I listen to abc classic fm when I'm driving because it feels like it's rinsing my brains from all the thousand voices/ideas running so fast.

Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

Sian Evans: Good question, I'll know closer to the time. Probably another single.

Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

Sian Evans: Yep. Many many times! I could be paying off a mortgage with what I've spent on creative projects and touring. Which seems realistically more valuable as a sole parent. Instead I have a really zaney kid, a van, a tonne of second hand and curb side furniture, a heap of milk crates and a bunch of instruments. But yeah, tour lyf seems so much more "living the dream" than the actual reality. There is a fine balance. For me, being on the road, I LOVE it, but so much more when I know I have a proper home to return to.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Sian Evans: They are different. I can't say one is better. The experiences are completely different and both equally as important. They share strengths and weaknesses that fit each other perfectly.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Sian Evans: Michelle Shocked. I loved her stories and the charisma of the way in which she told them. She is the reason I wanted to be a songer songwriter.

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Sian Evans: I see success as financially viable. So I'm not sure I can say it's successful as such, but I love singing and other people seem to as well so if we share it together, the connection is what drives me to continue. The creative expression. The ability to inspire others potentially.

Question: What's a typical day like?

Sian Evans: I think in bed about lots of stuff before I actually get out of bed. About a couple of hours even. Then coffee about 7am. I'll check Facebook and Instagram and my emails, and my calendar and then usually formulate a list of priorities for the day outside the school run. Then School lunch, packing for work, telling my kid to out his socks on five times, dishes, laundry, school run, work (I consider rehearsals to be work now to so it'll be that or admin or whatever else needs to be sorted) school run, home work, park, dinner, TV, bed!

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?

Sian Evans: I'm not sure whether it's something I became. I think it was always me. But I definitely love elements of the lifestyle, the people and the places. Especially folk festivals.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Sian Evans: Tough question. Really tough. I think anyone who has really bled for their music, that I share creative chemistry, they'd have to be either tech savvy and fast, or really great with harmonies and songwriting.

Question: Do you have a website fans can visit?

Sian Evans: www.facebook.com/sianevansmusicpage

Question: Can you tell us 5 things required for a happy healthy & enjoyable life?

Sian Evans: - Everything in moderation; clean eating, exercise and getting loose
- downtime/headspace/sleep/silence
- new things/places/travel
- ambition/higher purpose
- family/love. All the things seem meaningless with no one to share them with retire to.
