Interview with Profanity Fair
Question: How would you describe your music?
Profanity Fair: Profanity fair's style? We like to think of ourselves as genre fluid, non-binary! There's so many genres... we don't like to label ourselves with one. We try to break the societal genre norms. Well something like that anyway......
Question: What inspired Strawberry Jellyfish?
Profanity Fair: The inspiration for Strawberry Jellyfish comes from the endless stream of repetitive, brain-dead, reality-tv, cookie-cutter, factory-line top 40! Plastic and soulless "Look at me, look at me... Where's my 15 minutes" culture we're all drowning in.
Question: Can you tell us about your upcoming album?
Profanity Fair: 'The Bombastic Bop' as an album lives up to its title. An eclectic collage of sound and visual styles... All linked together with its lyrical story from start to finish. We wear our hearts on our sleeves when it comes to what we want to say.
Question: Is there a particular message you hope listeners take from your music?
Profanity Fair: Our message for the listener is to abandon this tribalistic media. Come up with your own ideas and conclusions. Not to be so heavily influenced by specific people or institutions that don't give a f$@k about you i.e. celebrities, corporations, politics and so on.
Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?
Profanity Fair: Recording or playing live? Yeah recording is fun for the first 10 minutes till you realise it's gonna take two and half years to complete.... So yeah, playing live, running around and sweating like one armed bricklayer from birkdale is way more of a good time or as Triple j host's love to say "Oh yeeeaaa that's a Vibe"!.
Question: Can we expect any upcoming shows?
Profanity Fair: Album launch is TBC.
Question: What is the story behind the band name?
Profanity Fair: The name 'Profanity Fair' seemed antithetical to our irreverent sound and lyrical material. Plus it sounds familiar and, as far as we know, no one else claimed it !!
Question: How did the band come together?
Profanity Fair: 'Profanity Fair' started with Mitch and Tye writing a 6 track ep ready to release before the dreaded (world ending) plague arrived. Knowing that; playing live was not in the foreseeable future so we decided to use the time and write a full length album. Meeting up with some old friends over a few bevys. Michael, our bassist, and the addition of Taylor on the drum's... we hit the studio for a few month's to get gig-ready and here we are.
Question: What motivates you most when writing music?
Profanity Fair: There are many motivations for when we create and write music but if we had to narrow it down to its most basic form... it's all about sh@t that pisses us off! And to get those hips-swinging on the d-floor. Oh yeah... and to be rich and famous! That's the real answer to this question: most bands don't have balls to say it.
Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?
Profanity Fair: Mutemath, Julie Andrews, Green Day, Kenny G, Frenzal Rhomb, Guns N Roses, Randy Newman, Jack White, Queen and our lord and saviour Prince.
Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Profanity Fair: I don't think any REAL musician thinks that. They just do what they love, and unfortunately this is the only industry we have.
Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?
Profanity Fair: Seeing a bloke scull a tinny then throwing it at his mates head while rocking out and going bananas at a show!
Question: What's a typical day like?
Profanity Fair: Waking up at 11, hungover AF, chuckin-a-sickie and powering through the endless checklist of tasks and deadlines with promotion and recording.... you know: the fun side of being in a band!
Question: What's next, for you?
Profanity Fair: Our album launch for 'The Bombastic Bop' and to play as many show's as we possibly can. Then when we are sick of that... and people are sick of us... back to the studio we go !!!
