Polish Club Just Talking

Set to perform two nights at the Factory Theatre for Great Southern Nights, Sydney two-piece Polish Club drops Just Talking via Island Records Australia.  The new single is a carefree, low stakes singalong created in the depths of winter in anticipation of summer. As the days get hotter, the time has come for this three-minute breeze to take its rightful place at the top of your cruising with the windows down towards the nearest beach playlist.
 
It's hard to get David Novak or John-Henry Pajak to articulate exactly how this song came about. With such an arduous and self-aware songwriting process last year in the lead up to their "difficult second album" Iguana, the duo knew it was best to switch off the voice in their heads and lean on impulse. "We had found ourselves overthinking songs, so it was instinctual to shut that down and go back to writing whatever felt right. Songs that sound effortless do so because they were effortless to write. It's near impossible to fake that," Novak reflects.
 
It's been said a million times at this point, but Polish Club are known to do things fast and loud. As a result, small changes made in the name of restraint can have a larger effect than they would on most others. The inclusion of the humble acoustic guitar as the hero of this song marks the first time the band have done so in a single. "We've been writing in a more stripped back environment and it has resulted in music that has to stand up on its own merit with just melody and beat over some chords. That simplicity and directness permeates through the lyrics and message."
 
And the message is nothing if not simple and direct. With hyperbole and anxiety being the cocktail of choice of late, Just Talking delivers a plea that feels increasingly familiar. Novak gives us the cliff notes, "Why the hell am I angry, what are we even doing? Let's just relax and speak to each other like normal people. I'd be a hell of a lot less stressed and things would probably be better for all if everyone just calmed down and listened to each other, myself included."
 
It's music to make you feel good. It's the hard seltzer to lay you down on the beach towel. Though it doesn't need any metaphor, just take it from John-Henry, "It's a summery jam." That's all there is to it.
 
Polish Club have emerged as one of Australia's best live acts, having embarked upon numerous sold out national tours. The duo have thus far released two LPs and two EPs. Their triple j feature albums, debut LP Alright Already (2017) and follow-up Iguana (2019), both debuted in the top 20 on the ARIA Album Chart with the former earning a Best Rock Release ARIA Award nomination. Led by singles Divided, Come Party, We Don't Care, Breakapart and Clarity which was voted #76 in triple j's Hottest 100 of 2018 as well as high rotation across Triple M, the band continue to be championed by music media and fans across the country. Not one to keep their fans waiting, Polish Club also released EPs Okie Dokie (2017) and nye_2020_megamix.exe (2019) right off the back of both albums. Most recently Polish Club headed into the triple j studios for a memorable Like A Version performance of Doja Cat's Say So.
