Pink cakes to help provide support for rural families

IGA supports the McGrath Foundation this January

To help raise money for the McGrath Foundation, independent grocers IGA will donate 40c from every PINK CHOCOLATE MUD CAKE sold from 4 to 31 January 2010.

Co-founded by Jane and Glenn McGrath after Jane's initial recovery from breast cancer, the McGrath Foundation provides physical, psychological and emotional support for women diagnosed with breast cancer and their families from the time of their diagnosis and throughout their treatment for breast cancer.

The funds raised from the sale of the PINK CHOCOLATE MUD CAKE will go towards the placement of McGrath Breast Care Nurses in rural and regional Australia while increasing breast awareness in younger women. There are currently 53 McGrath Breast Care Nurses located in areas as far reaching as Hervey Bay (QLD), Geraldton (WA), Armidale (NSW), Warrnambool (VIC) and Whyalla (SA) providing an invaluable health resource and support for women dealing with breast cancer treatment.

Executive Director of the McGrath Foundation, Tracy Bevan, believes fund raising through independent grocers IGA is relevant to the aims of the McGrath Foundation.

"IGA stores are located all over regional and rural Australia. By buying a PINK CHOCOLATE MUD CAKE from their local IGA, customers are supporting women in their very own communities. The McGrath Foundation endeavours to help those being treated for cancer and to educate the younger generation of women to be breast aware."

Mick Daly, the IGA National Chairman said "IGA Retailers across Australia are pleased to be involved in the McGrath Foundation initiative. Sadly, breast cancer affects many women in communities all over Australia. We hope that by raising funds through our network of 1,300 stores we will be able to aid the McGrath Foundation in carryout out its vital work of support Australian women and their families by providing even more McGrath Breast Care Nurses where they are really needed."

Through the IGA Community Chest and associated program independent retailers across Australia have raised in excess of $42m for local communities, charities and worth causes in the last 7 years. It is something we're passionate about and we do 365 days a year.

The IGA limited edition PINK CHOCOLATE MUD CAKE will be available in-store from 4 to 31January 2010. The cakes will retail at approximately $5.99 (dependent on state) with 40c of the sale going to the placement of McGrath Breast Care Nurses in rural and regional Australia.
