Chips are down for fish oil with arrival of superior OmegaGen Neptune Krill Oil

Having convinced health conscious Australians of the benefits of supplementing their diet with regular fish oil, medical experts are now turning their attention to a new source of health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids that contains phospholipids and a unique antioxidant.

Emerging research has put the spotlight on a tiny, little-known but incredibly abundant crustacean that lives in the Antarctic Ocean. This shrimp-like creature is Euphausia superba. Or "krill" for short.

Australians will have access - for the first time - to patented Neptune Krill Oil (NKO™) in the form of a new product called OmegaGen NKOŽ.

A randomised trial has shown that NKOŽ is significantly more effective than fish oil in treating hypercholesterolemia. It also showed that NKOŽ was better than fish oil in reducing blood levels of LDL1 ("bad cholesterol") and in raising HDL ("good cholesterol").

Risk-benefit analysis2 suggests that the regular use of OmegaGen NKOŽ has the potential to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events - heart attacks, strokes etc. - by 52%. Consider what that means - people who take OmegaGen NKOŽ regularly are potentially 52% less likely than the general population to have a cardiac event in the next 10 years. The same analysis suggests that this reduction in risk of having a cardiovascular event is better than that provided by fish oil.

Add to this the evidence that shows NKOŽ can inhibit inflammation and reduce the pain of arthritis within a short treatment period (between 7 and 14 days)3 and it's clear that there are both short term and long term benefits associated with regular use of OmegaGen NKOŽ.

Group Leader of the Nutrition and Metabolism Group at the Heart Research Institute and Associate Professor of Medicine at Sydney University, Dr Jeffrey Cohn, says NKO is an interesting new nutraceutical.

"What makes krill oil so interesting from a health point of view, is the way in which the omega-3 fatty acids are "packaged". Instead of being associated with triglyceride, krill oil fatty acids are largely associated with phospholipid. This phospholipid is potentially beneficial by having anti-inflammatory and atheroprotective properties."

Gerald Quigley, a practicing community pharmacist and accredited herbalist based in Melbourne, is another who is interested in possible community health benefits.

"People already know about, and benefit from, the omega-3 fatty acids available in fish oil supplements," says Mr Quigley. "What people should now consider is the increased benefit of the omega-3 fatty acids delivered through krill oil supplements - it's like a 'supercharged' fish oil."
