Bunya Productions has today debuted the trailer for auteur filmmaker Ivan Sen's critically acclaimed outback noir LIMBO, starring AACTA Award-winning, Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated Simon Baker (High Ground, Breath), with Rob Collins (Mystery Road the TV series, Firebite), Natasha Wanganeen (Firebite, Rabbit Proof Fence) and Nicholas Hope (Bad Boy Bubby, The Drover's Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson).
A poignant, intimate journey into the complexities of loss and the impact of the justice system on Aboriginal families in Australia, LIMBO will release nationally in Australian cinemas on 18 May. Sen and Baker will tour the country in May for yet-to-be-announced advanced Q&A screenings.
Hot off the international festival circuit, screening In Competition at Berlinale – the Berlin International Film Festival, Sen's work has been hailed as a "visually striking outback procedural" by The Hollywood Reporter and "a tough, muscular film with the grit of crime, but a heartbeat of compassion," by The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw. Says Variety's Guy Lodge, "Simon Baker [is] initially near-unrecognizable and never better."
Baker stars as Travis, a jaded detective, arrives in the remote outback town of Limbo to investigate the cold case murder of local Indigenous girl Charlotte Hayes 20 years ago. As truths about the murder begin to unfold, the detective gains a new insight into the unsolved case from the victim's fractured family, the surviving witnesses and the reclusive brother of the chief suspect.
LIMBO is the seventh feature from Ivan Sen, following the success of his 2022 sci-fi film Loveland and celebrated outback mysteries Goldstone and Mystery Road (now a popular ABC series).
Renowned for writing, directing, editing, handling cinematography and scoring his own films, Sen is also a co-producer on LIMBO, alongside Bunya Productions' David Jowsey and Greer Simpkin (Mystery Road Origin, High Ground, Sweet Country) and Rachel Higgins (Apprentice, Red Hill).
LIMBO is a Bunya Productions film presented by the ABC and Screen Queensland in association with Windalong Films and the South Australian Film Corporation, and was shot on location in Cooper Pedy, South Australia.
The film is distributed by Dark Matter Distribution and Bonsai Films.
LIMBO WILL BE RELEASED IN CINEMAS ON 18 MAY 2023
