Kim Salmon considers his brand new album -My Script' to be his first 'real" solo album.
For it he ignored all doctors' advice and formulated, concocted and scientifically processed every ingredient according to his OWN experience and formulae. He'll leave it to the listeners to decide for themselves if the title relates to that process or to a story line … or to something else.
Originally aspiring to be a nuclear physicist, Salmon was swayed by the sounds of rock'n'roll and became a Scientist.
As one of the founding members of the Scientists and the Beasts of Bourbon, Kim Salmon's career has spanned decades, his bands reputations have continued to grow internationally, from their inception to long after they finished their careers, with the Scientists widely regarded as the frontrunners of the Seattle -Grunge' movement.
Kim is an inductee of the West Australian Music Industry Association Hall of Fame and The Age EG Awards Hall of Fame (Victoria) and has 3 WAMI Awards.
My Script is a candid, largely autobiographical work comprising 20 tracks, ranging from full band productions to stripped back minimalist tracks. Salmon teamed with the album's producer Myles Mumford after working with him when he was the producing The Key of Sea Volume II to benefit the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and Human Rights Arts and Film Festival. On that project, Kim collaborated with political commentator and media star Waleed Aly on the track 'Client JGT683" – an indictment on Australia's refugee policy – which also appears on My Script.
The process of recording My Script was nothing like Salmon's previous releases. 'Myles Mumford took great care to make optimum use of recording techniques for me to render the idea under his sympathetic direction. The results were surprisingly accessible" says Salmon.
Salmon says of the album and the recording process, 'If I were to -conceptualize' this album I would say I have metaphorically put myself on the couch and made the world my analyst. However if I'm honest that is an after-the-fact reading of the situation. All I have done with this record is just make music and write songs without any criteria other than -do I like this idea?' and 'does it sound good?" I've never really done that."
The album was mastered by wunderkind Mikey Young (Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Total Control), and the incomparable Pete Barrett of Hoof Design created the artwork.
To launch this brand new album, Kim hits the road on a national tour from March through to April but this time with something different. For these shows, Salmon will use a different ensemble to play the material from the album, plus past, present and future tracks in each town and city he visits.
After experimenting with this concept late in 2015 with shows in Perth and Melbourne, it was an unqualified success and Salmon is very excited in anticipation of what all of the different players will bring to each show.
