Sydney electronic producer, DJ and songwriter Karmel Jager has announced her latest venture, her new EP "Your Love." The EP opens with the title track, "Your Love," with luscious vocals and dreamy pads that progress throughout this warm analogue style house track, with all the unexpected twists and turns that we've come to expect from this budding artist.
"This song is about that feeling of being so in love you feel like you don't have any control over yourself anymore..when you've completely given yourself over to someone, and you're so completely under love's spell, that there's nothing you can do to be free of it," said Karmel Jager.
"I actually wrote the song whilst out on tour as a classical singer. I remember I was sitting in a car as we were being driven between locations, and the words of this song came to me and I immediately wrote them down in my notebook. I didn't make any edits from what I wrote and I even drew up some manuscript paper quickly and jotted down what I heard in my head so I wouldn't forget the melody!
Originally a professional classical singer, Karmel honed her craft at the Sydney Conservatorium and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Based in the UK for three years, she performed as a classical singer throughout Europe, and recorded extensively as a session singer at AIR and Abbey Road Studios, appearing on soundtracks for films, tv and video games, including the likes of BBC's Sherlock, The Avengers, Star Wars and World of Warcraft.
Karmel moved from London back to her hometown of Sydney in 2017. Transitioning from classical to electronic music, Karmel released her debut self-produced track in 2018 and began DJ-ing in early 2019. Karmel has been honing her production skills alongside building her DJ career, releasing a second track "Trafalgar Square" in 2019, which was praised by Purple Sneakers, Women In Pop, Culture Eater, LeFutureWave and more.
Karmel has written a great Top 5 piece "Top 5 Electronic Women":
Top 5 Aussie Electronic Women
1. BRUX Formerly of the project Elizabeth Rose, a seriously experienced DJ and producer, her tracks Fruit and Belong in particular I've played on repeat more times than I can count. Previously based in Sydney, and moved to New York in more recent months, BRUX continues to make waves and new collaborations. Her latest release "Crazy" is a collab with Max Styler and Kevin McKay, is more of a house vibe that we usually hear from her, and is out on Glasgow Underground.
2. Ninajirachi Just doing her usual cool shit, her track "Slytherin" with Kota Banks is totally addictive. It's just sexy and slick and who doesn't like the Harry Potter reference?! Off the same album, Blumiere, "Alight" is stunning. A heartfelt song that is way too relatable, the production is so pretty with a fat and yet somehow still gentle bass, this is one woman worth looking up to for sure. Nina is signed to NLV and has consistently produced bangas since she won Triple J Unearthed High, and frankly, Pure Luck still slaps.
3. Alice Ivy With gorgeous, sweet production, the vocals in her tracks are equally beautiful and she certainly teams up with some great vocalists. "Get Me a Drink" continues to be a long standing favourite, but I'm currently addicted to "Champagne Late Nights", and if you haven't heard it yet, get yourself around it. It's exactly what I love in a song too - it's so short you just have to play it 10 times in a row. "In My Mind" is my next favourite from her latest album Don't Sleep.
4. AK SPORTS Originally based in Sydney, and relocated to LA via London, this Aussie producer's remix of Anna Lunoe's "Ice-cream" is totally off the planet. I'm a big fan of her style.. with unapologetic breaks and vocal chops, this girl is bringing her sound to the West Coast and they're just lapping it up. She's got a new Rave Tape out on Club Glow, and a bunch of gigs lined up over in a land without lockdown..
5. NAZ This melodic house DJ and producer relocated to Amsterdam during the peak Covid season of 2020. With her debut EP coming out on Statement! Deep, she has since been signed to Anjunadeep, and is doing more cool things than you could poke a stick at. Her tracks having been spun by the likes of Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten, "Underwater" is the latest track by this rising artist. Look out for this girl on tour all over the place, and be sure to follow her instagram page for some of the funniest stories around.
