Interview with Jaryd Terkelsen

Ash Bisset studied an exercise science degree and worked in Sports Nutrition management then spent many of his recent years running operations for one of Australia's most recognised sports nutrition companies.

Both with over 10 years in the health and fitness industry saw a gap in the market and wanted to co-create superfood infused coffee to help people get the most of of their cup of coffee as well as getting the most out of their day.

Question: What inspired the creation of BeforeYouSpeak Coffee?

Jaryd Terkelsen: After 10 years in the health and fitness industry, we saw a huge potential for coffee and a gap in the market. In Australia, instant coffee actually exceeds brewed coffee consumption, so we knew there was a way to make sure people got more out of their daily caffeine hit.

Question: What is BeforeYouSpeak Coffee?

Jaryd Terkelsen: Beforeyouspeak Coffee is a natural and high performance coffee for anyone to enjoy. Transforming the functional coffee industry, this premium instant coffee helps to improve health, performance and wellbeing. Each coffee is infused with superfoods so you get more out of each cup!

Question: What is collagen?

Jaryd Terkelsen: Collagen is a protein found in the connective tissues of both humans and animals and serves to provide strength, elasticity and structure.

We use marine collagen, which improves skin elasticity, joint health, reduces the ageing of your skin, enhances hair health, improves nail strength, visibly reduces cellulite, improves digestive health and more. The reason we chose this exact marine collagen is because it contains higher levels of type I and III collagen (the type for skin, nails and hair) and it is absorbed up to 150% better.

Question: Why is everyone adding collagen to their diet?

Jaryd Terkelsen: Unfortunately, we lead more stressful lives, are exposed to more pollutants and inflammatory foods, which all impacts our ability to produce collagen naturally. Therefore, adding it to our diet may improve our overall health. Supplementary collagen is produced in a way that improves its digestibility, meaning it can be an easy addition to our daily diet.

Question: What nutritional benefits does collagen have?

Jaryd Terkelsen: Supplementary collagen supports the connective tissues in our body, including skin, gut lining, joints and many other areas of the body. The body also relies on nutrients such as zinc, copper, vitamin C as well as amino acids to ensure our natural levels of collagen are synthesised.

Question: What other foods should we increase in our diet to get a beauty glow?

Jaryd Terkelsen: Foods rich in vitamin C, such as kiwi fruit, citrus fruit, berries and cruciferous vegetables are important in building proteins for healthy skin.

Zinc is also a key ingredient to healthy skin, which can be found in oysters, hemp seeds, sesame seeds and legumes.

Foods rich in omega 3's such as oily fish, avocados and olive oil help to hydrate the skin and slow down the ageing process due to their anti-inflammatory properties.

Supplementary collagen also helps provide structural integrity to the skin and improves elasticity.

Question: How does collagen complement our fitness routine?

Jaryd Terkelsen: Collagen is a structural and supportive protein which helps protect our joints, tendons, muscles and bones. As we age, our collagen levels natural decline and consequently, so does bone density, joint cartilage and muscle tone, which means supplementary collagen may help reduce the rate of degeneration. By ensuring we consume foods that assist in the synthesis of collagen to support natural levels as well as boosting with supplementary collagen we may be able to protect our connective tissues and improve our fitness output.
