Sydney-based artist HANDSOME is excited to share her debut EP No Hat No Play out today via Dot Dash Recordings / Remote Control. Catch HANDSOME as she celebrates the release at Sydney's Red Rattler & Melbourne's The Old Bar this October 12th & 18th respectively - supported by the freshly announced Sam Bluer, Geryon, Flower Boy, Kid Heron & Stereogamous.
It has been a whirlwind year of growth for HANDSOME, introducing herself in late 2017 with her debut single 'Late Night Ball Game feat. Joyride', it was quickly received as an indie queer anthem that struck a chord with many.
HANDSOME followed up in early 2018 with her second single 'Save Some Love'. Described by LNWY as "Stunningly vulnerable" and Pilerats as "Elegant, uplifting and jaw dropping", the song was premiered on triple j, and found itself championed by community radio across Australia, officially added to double j, and spun on KEXP
(Seattle). Her third and most recent offering came in the form of electro-pop gem 'No Cowards'. Described by UK's The Line of Best Fit as "gorgeously glitchy" and praised by Purple Sneakers as "a true celebration", 'No Cowards' kept dance floors heaving with industry and fans alike during her recent live performances at BIGSOUND earlier this month.
HANDSOME on No Hat No Play:
"The title is a rule that we all grew up with in Australia, that was a playful way of reminding children of the dangers of the sun, and the damage that can be caused if you don't cover up your skin. Not that I defy this rule - but it carries a certain agenda with it that cannot be ignored, and that is that simply older generations know better.
I started HANDSOME to question this entirely, and No Hat No Play explores this in depth."
She continues, "I feel like the world is having a moment of celebrating one's self-expression, it is powerful at this time to be yourself and I guess this also comes at a time when I know myself better than ever. It took time for me to know who was, and now its here I want to do whatever I can to encourage and support others to be brave and proud of who they are through my music."
HANDSOME welcome's the growing visibility of queerness in music and art, saying "now more than ever the expression of sexuality in music is loud, proud and admired as a strength… its about time, isn't it? I feel so privileged to write and produce music that celebrates a community I feel so grateful for."
