Known for his deeply meaningful brand of folk-roots that emanates with lyrical sincerity and instrumental prowess, North Queensland's Dan Baker is unveiling his next melodic journey with the release of EP 'From Corners Quiet'.
Showcasing his aptitude for eloquent lyricism, Dan Baker has delivered a tender five-track EP that weaves empathetically between loss and longing, promise and forgiveness. Brought to life with powerful melodies and commanding vocals, Baker speaks more on the inspiration behind the EP:
"Writing from the point of view of the outsider, the observer, has always appealed to the autodidactic parts of my nature. Relating apparent patterns of the experience of others to my own has, at times, helped to discern some clarity. This has led to a slightly gentler introspection and optimism. Unencumbered by judgement but not by hope, the outsider simply takes note from corners quiet."
With Dan Baker's natural ability to transform insightful observations into introspective, all-encompassing folk-scapes, 'From Corners Quiet' brings together five intimate stories that meld fluidly to create a beautifully nuanced EP.
Easing us into the EP is opening track 'Freeze Dried Coffee', a ruminative, slow-folk ballad that sees Baker reflect on his perceived failures through a slightly more jovial and forgiving lens. Baker's vocals reflect a desperate optimism that is emphasised with drifting violins, wane whistling and formidable bass guitar riffs.
Charming second track 'Angela & Miles' shivers with quiet longing, detailing the story of two unlikely lovers, crossing paths in a bar after years of separation. Layers of delicately picked strings create intricate finger-style folk harmonies, underlain with light brush strokes of percussion.
At the heart of the EP is leading single 'Take This Rose', an impassioned expression of love and promise for commitment during a long-distance relationship. Floating instrumentals are contrasted by the earthy tones of Baker's decadent vocals, the ebb and flow between melancholic verse and uplifting chorus mirroring the difficult emotions that arise when loved ones are separated by distance.
Strapping violins signal the beginning of 'Struggling Stranger', a desperate folk tune delivered with the jaunty energy of a sea-shanty as Baker's guttural vocals detail the strangers' struggle in his desire to connect. The chorus echoes with the anguished plea of the stranger, calling out for someone, anyone...
Dan Baker's previous releases have seen support from Double J, The AU Review, AAA Backstage, Country Town, Triple J Unearthed and more, as well as receiving the 2019 Australian Roots Music Award for Best Song.
