Interview with Caitlin Min Fa
Question: How would you describe your music?
Caitlin Min Fa: I like to think that my music is a youthful blend of raw energy, tight grooves and a poised sound. It's honest and full of warmth, like you're getting a virtual hug.
Question: Can you tell us about Younger Self?
Caitlin Min Fa: Co-written with Rob Amoruso and Alice Blake, 'Younger Self' is reminding us to let go of imperfections and to embrace life's moments more – a message I would tell my younger self. I've always been afraid to step into my full potential.
It's so easy to hold yourself back because of insecurities or fear, but if you don't work through that fear, you're going to miss out on some pretty great things. If you give yourself a chance, you'll be surprised of what you're actually capable of.
Question: Is there a particular message you hope listeners take from your music?
Caitlin Min Fa: I just want to impact people in a positive way when they listen to my music. My ultimate goal as an artist is to be able to lift others up.
Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?
Caitlin Min Fa: I love the thrill of performing to a live audience. The energy is exhilarating.
Question: Which is your favourite song to perform live and why?
Caitlin Min Fa: Anything Tori Kelly because her melodies are poppin'. They always resonant with me and her lyrics are so introspective.
Question: If you could have anyone, in the world, attend a show, who would it be?
Caitlin Min Fa: Anne Marie for sure.
Question: What motivates you most when writing music?
Caitlin Min Fa: Knowing that this is what I was born to do and if it touches one person, I know my job is done.
Question: Which music/artists are you currently listening to?
Caitlin Min Fa: At the moment I'm listening to Astrid S and a lot of gospel.
Question: What or who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?
Caitlin Min Fa: I can't really pin down anything in particular but singing has always been something where I've felt most at home. Ever since I can remember, I've never really thought about anything else besides performing. And I guess having the right people in my life, who believed in me and taught me to believe in myself, allowed me to embrace this career path. I started in the National Children's Choir of Australia when I was 8, enrolled in singing lessons when I was 11 and I've never looked back.
Question: What's a typical day like?
Caitlin Min Fa: A typical day in the life of Caitlin in iso includes:
• Waking up late
• Drinking a lot of coffee
• Returning emails / admin
• Vocal teaching via Zoom
• Singing / songwriting
• Working out
• Getting some vitamin D
• Watching endless reruns of 'Friends' and 'New Girl' for many hours
• Going to bed at a very late hour
• And repeat
In a non-lockdown world, there would be a lot more gigs mixed into this routine and a lot less Zoom.
Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?
Caitlin Min Fa: Definitely the journey of discovering who I am and who I want to be. I think writing and singing my own material has played a big part in that. I've grown up singing a lot of other people's songs, so it's exciting to get my own stuff out there that I can be proud of, and to have people react in such a positive light.
Question: What's next, for you?
Caitlin Min Fa: My 2nd single is underway so I'll be heading back into the studio very soon. I'm also hoping for the return of gigs. Once we're out of this social distancing season I'd love to be able to sing live again!
