Blackmore Supplies for Tricky Kids

When we meet in the park, my mother's group and I often go green with envy when we talk about those mums who claim to have a "golden child". As legend has it, this perfect son or daughter eats up everything on his or her plate - even brussel sprouts, broccoli and zucchini.

Like many mums out there, I am not the other of a golden child.

When it comes to food… well, let's just say I wouldn't be winning Mother of the Year anytime soon. But it's through no fault of my own.

I've resigned myself to the fact that my kids are fussy eaters. Last week Olive (who's three) refused to eat anything but bananas, while my five-year-old James decided he was going to become a vegetarian (where on earth does a five-year-old hear about vegetarians).

I'm aware that these phases won't last forever. But I'm starting to get concerned that my kids aren't getting the nutrients they need. In fact, just as I write that line, Olive lets out an almightily cough.

Update: it's a day later. I'm still hearing the occasional cough coming from Olive's bedroom. Meanwhile I just watched a segment on a current affairs show about children's nutrition and the importance of getting enough fish in the diet. The presenter reckoned supplements may help those particularly fussy eaters. Intrigued, I decided to investigate.

Hubby gets home from work and I race off to the Chemist, where I corner the sales assistant and fire off a million questions. "What can I give my three-year-old who has a mucous-ey cough that doesn't taste like medicine? What can I give my five-year-old to cover the nutritional gaps when all he'll eat is potatoes? And can these products be as natural as possible?"

I return home armed with supplies. First on the list: Blackmores Cough Combat. A great-tasting ivy leaf extract cough syrup that may relieve chesty coughs and respiratory congestion associated with colds. It helps to thin and loosen mucus. I chose this one in particular because it is suitable for my whole family and can be taken by kids as young as 2 years old.

Next is Blackmores Fruity Fishies. This is a chewable, natural fish oil supplement that supports healthy brain development, function and learning in children. Tick!

Finally, Blackmores Kids Multi. A vitamin and mineral formation specially formulated with 18 essential nutrients to support children's healthy growth and development.

"Blackmores seems to know a lot about kids' nutrition," says hubby. He Googles Blackmores and discovers they actually have an entire community dedicated to Parenting and Children's Health on their website. "That's great," I say. "Why don't you go on there and ask if there are any other parents who have fussy eaters?"

Ten minutes later I see he's engrossed in a conversation about golf swing in the Men's Health community. Sigh.

We all do our best to provide out children with a balanced diet so they eat well. But sometimes, our kids may go through periods of fussy eating, and taking a multivitamin supplement can help fill in the nutritional gaps.

Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist see your healthcare professional. Vitamin supplements should not replace a balanced diet.
