Since her debut single 'Feels Like Us', Billie-Jo Porter has been spreading positive vibes with her roots-orientated style of country music. After enjoying generous radio airplay across Australia, the song has recently been announced as a finalist in Nashville's Unsigned Only Music Competition. Now well and truly on the map, Billie-Jo releases her 4th single – 'Let It All Roll Out'.
The song immediately embraces you like a hug from an old friend. A simple arrangement of guitars surrounds Billie-Jo's vocals, as she reminisces about good times. "This song is a reminder to live in the moment, be right here and let it all roll out," explains Billie-Jo. "It takes us back to a moment in time, where we didn't really know what the future held, what our next move was, or where the next paycheck was coming from. One thing we did know was we were having the time of our lives."
Inspired by the incomparable Tamworth Country Music Festival, Billie-Jo wrote the tune with long-time collaborator Rachael Kennedy during a hot Tamworth January. "After watching a KB and The Flood show at TCMF we were hanging out on the front verandah at Rach's parents place with her mum. I suggested we write a song," recalls Billie-Jo.
Growing up a stone's throw from the country music capital, in Quirindi, has made Billie-Jo a veteran of the festival. "TCMF is my favourite time of year in Tamworth. I have attended the festival for years." She even met co-writer Rachael Kennedy several years ago while serving pints at the Tamworth Hotel. "She had a regular Thursday night gig there and convinced me to learn the bass guitar to join in… That led to a long time collaboration including many years of playing live gigs in both Australia and Canada, playing at Tamworth Country Music Festival in both venues and busking on the streets."
The single bears the sonic signature of producer, Shane Nicholson (Beccy Cole, Catherine Britt); a weave of acoustic instruments and percussion, leaving just enough space for Billie-Jo's nostalgic storytelling to seep through. "Recording this track with Shane Nicolson was an experience I will never forget," remarks Billie-Jo excitedly. "I walked in with a bunch of phone recordings of my vocals and guitar to get an idea of the track. The musical landscape [Shane] created takes the song to the next level."
Since her debut mid last year Billie-Jo has charted three consecutive singles in the CountryTown Hot 50 airplay chart (peak #15). Her previous offering 'More Than Friends' received heavy support from Apple Music, appearing on three editorial playlists. At the start of 2022 she made a splash on Tamworth's big stage as a grand finalist in the Toyota Star Maker competition and now she's been named a finalist in the Unsinged Only Music Competition.
Music has been a constant in Billie-Jo's life for a long time and performing has become somewhat of a remedy for the Coffs Harbour local. Her passion has taken her across the globe and to big stages at home, supporting the likes of Thirsty Merc, Catherine Britt, Hussy Hicks and Drew McAlister. In the coming months her diary is jam packed with shows all across NSW.
In 'Let It All Roll Out' Billie-Jo takes pause to count her blessings. With its lyrics inspired by the Tamworth Country Music Festival it's affectionately Aussie and both deeply personal for Billie-Jo. "For me it is one of the most meaningful songs I have recorded so far because of the history I have with TCMF and the journey of my friendship with Rach who co-wrote the song. Rach inspired me to get a guitar, learn to play and reminded me of the joy than can be found singing and performing."
Billie-Jo has been previously known for her upbeat, joyful bops, yet this single shows us another side of the singer/songwriter. Still brimming with positive energy, the song feels as relaxing and hopeful as the Tamworth morning on which it was written.
