Ben Ransom has released his new single 'Mamma Said' and while you'll have to listen to find out exactly what his mamma said, there's no doubt that she taught him how to deliver a roaring country track. It follows the success of his last single 'Night After Night' – the first single released from his forthcoming album – which reached #2 on both the iTunes Country Singles chart and the Country Tracks Top 40 chart, spending 17 weeks in the latter.
Recorded between Nashville and Sydney with the legendary Matt Fell at the helm as producer, the single features Chris McHugh (Keith Urban's longtime drummer) and Rob McNelley (CMA Guitarist of the Year) to complete the lineup. Speaking about the inspiration behind the track, Ransom says 'I wrote this song in my head while I was travelling around. I'd be driving down the highway, thinking about the sliding doors of fate, and wondering how many instances I'd been through where I'd been close to death and never realized. Then I'd ask, how is it I've made it this far? I was left contemplating whether it's fate, chance, or maybe it's the wisdom passed on from those that have lived life and know better than me.'
Thanks to the hard work of the session musicians, Matt Fell and Ransom himself, 'Mamma Said' has turned out to be a energetic country-rock track that'll have listeners itching to get out on the road and contemplate some of life's questions themselves.
The music video was shot by Electric Light Films with Luke Oldknow taking responsibility for both production and shooting. It was filmed in the NSW town of Bingara at the heritage-listed Roxy Theatre with a crew of just two thanks to the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Ransom had to perform every role in the film clip, which was a highly exhausting and a technical shoot that left no room for errors and second takes. After a full day of shooting and a hundred costume changes, the quirky, unique clip speaks for itself.
'We had to create a world in which the protagonist navigates the chances of life events in a scenario as simple as going to a concert,' says Ransom. 'It was simple enough until we started shooting. After about 20 minutes we thought that we'd bitten off more than we could chew and while the concept was by no means new or unique, it hadn't been attempted on this scale in our genre. The message, I guess, is that I could've been anyone – a rock star, a punter, a manager or the guy cleaning toilets.'
While the video may have seen Ransom operating as a lone figure, that hasn't always been the case. He's appeared at most of Australia's largest country festivals between headline tours and has supported major artists including Tim McGraw, Diesel, Mental As Anything, Sharon O'Neill, Gangajang, Dragon and many more. Fans, it seems, can't get enough, no doubt thanks to what Country Music Capital News called 'powerful vocals and infectious melodies' and 'all the hallmarks of a classic performer.'
