Sun-lovin' Melbourne outfit Baby Blue has been producing -70s garage with a hint of doo-wop and blues for merely a year or so, and they've already earned their stripes as leaders among the local indie scene. With previous singles New Girlfriend, Concentrate and most recently Fire And Ice, the time travelling four-piece are excited to reveal their next fresh installment I Like You today out on Neat Lawn Records.
Baby Blue is ultimately a marker for Rhea Caldwell's progress as both a songwriter and human, the trials and triumphs she faces finding their place in songs that appeal from the first instant. There's zero pretension at play, just a desire to connect with others and make sense of the world through music.
The second taste from the forthcoming EP Do What You Like due for release Friday 1 June. I Like You is a song about crushing on someone, and sees Rhea harnessing the storytelling of traditional heart-on-your-sleeve doo-wop with subtle nods to -50s and -60s rock and roll, that is both playful and uplifting. The Jangly guitars and the catchy dreamy pop melodies are just begging you to sing along.
Rhea along with her full band has become a powerful and compelling live act, performing alongside notable local acts Rolling Blackouts Costal Fever, The Ocean Party, Jordie Lane, Leah Senior, Emma Russack, and Timberwolf, as well as gracing the stages of Boogie Festival and playing at Bello Winter Music. More recently Baby Blue was invited to support international outfits The Courtney's, Chastity Belt, and Benjamin Booker's Bluesfest sideshow.
