Competitors primed for state competition.
Following the success of combing both the Junior and Senior Victorian Lifesaving Championships last year, Life Saving Victoria is gearing up for an even bigger championships at Lakes Entrance this year.
On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 March, over 2,000 competitive junior and senior lifesavers will gather at Lakes Entrance beach for the 2011 Victorian Lifesaving Championships hosted by Lakes Entrance Surf Life Saving Club.
Life Saving Victoria Aquatic Sports Manager, Drew Urlichs, says this is a huge event not only for the region, but the whole state.
"Young and old, professionals and beginners alike, come together from across the state to compete in and enjoy the excitement of the Championships. It's a fantastic way to keep our members enthusiastic about lifesaving as well as developing the young lifesavers that will be patrolling our waters in the future", Mr. Urlichs said.
For junior competitors, the State Championships are designed to provide an introduction to lifesaving within a fun environment. "This year will see the emergence of a new group of young stars that will make a name for themselves in the sport", Mr Urlichs said
The 2011 Victorian Life Saving Championships is also the last chance for senior athletes to compete against the states best before heading to next months 2011 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at Kurrawa Beach on the Gold Coast.
"These titles are great preparation for the Aussies and with such a strong and talented field it should make for compelling viewing for spectators," Mr. Urlichs said.
Around 7,000 spectators are expected to descend on Lakes Entrance to catch all the surf sport action. Local entertainment will be on offer throughout the Championships as well as local sponsors Dwyers Toyota, Eastcoast Plumbtec, Patties Foods, Lakes Sports & Community Club, James Yeates Printing & Design. Other sponsors of the event will also be there in support, Fruit Shoot, Engine & Dolphin.
