Yacht Club DJs Oddity Number 5 Tour

Too long have our dance floors lay dormant. Too long has -mash' been of the potato variety. Australia's favourite mash up maestros Yacht Club DJs will settle the score this April with their Oddity Number 5 Tour - an East Coast run of oddball proportions and the namesake of their fifth infamous mixtape.
 
It follows the duo's stint through the UK and US last year; personally invited by Grammy Award winners Mumford & Sons to join them on their Gentlemen of the Road Stopovers, alongside Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, HAIM, The Walkmen and The Vaccines.
 
After winning international hearts, and no doubt a few brewskies along the way, Yacht Club DJs busied themselves back home, working on their very first original EP. Recorded at Red Door Studio with Woody Annison (Dune Rats, Children Collide and Hunting Grounds), the EP is set for release later this year.
 
Whether in -da club, on -da bus, or at your great grand mamma's retirement home, Yacht Club DJs sure know how to bring the party, with their mixtape mantle already hosting -Kleptomania', -Demons of Gymnastics', -They Mostly Come At Night' and -Find Me A Macchiato Pronto'. Their latest mixtape instalment Oddity Number 5 will hit the interwebs next month, a free download brimming with Yacht Club's fearless repertoire spanning 60s blues, 90s pop, Disney soundtracks, death metal and everything in between.

 

Interview with Guy Chappell

Question: What can you tell us about the upcoming EP set for release, in April?

Guy Chappell: It was in the works for five years, but we were never happy with anything we had made. So we sat down at the end of last year and the start of 2014 and wrote specifically for it. Now we are very happy.


Question: How would you describe Oddity Number 5?

Guy Chappell: If your not skulling jager and slam dancing at a nunnery by the 10 minute mark you're doing it wrong.


Question: What should we expect from the upcoming Oddity Number 5 Tour?

Guy Chappell: Other than the above, it will be a mix of everything we've done over the last five years.

Question: Can you tell us about the special guest joining you on this tour?

Guy Chappell: It's Remi and he is bad ass! We saw him support Joey Bad Ass in Sydney - needless to say, it was a bad ass evening.


Question: Where do you find your inspiration when creating songs?

Guy Chappell: I get a lot of ideas watching movies - Shazam has also made things very easy when I hear cool stuff but can't remember it instantly.


Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

Guy Chappell: At home - Mac Demarco and Sky Ferreira

In the tour car - Rob Zombie and Pantera


Question: What was it like joining Mumford & Sons on their Gentlemen of the Road Stopovers?

Guy Chappell: Our second show we played with them was one of the only concerts at London's Olympic Park and there were 85,000 people there… it was a pretty low key affair (laughs). My favourite night was in Oklahoma when everyone on the tour had a super soaker fight around a pool at 2am and the Mumford guys all pulled out fire extinguishers.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

Guy Chappell: Live is a lot more fun obviously, but a finished recording after all the eye melting hours makes you feel pretty awesome.


Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

Guy Chappell: No one person - i just fell into it through DJing a regular club night in Melbourne.


Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

Guy Chappell: Pies.


Question: What's a typical day like?

Guy Chappell: I get up at 10am and go for an hour run. Then I watch cartoons and some news. I work on musics from 1 till 5pm, then get dinner poppin.


Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?
Guy Chappell: The dips and pitas on our rider.


Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

Guy Chappell: Andy Milonakis - check him out he's like 35 but sounds about 10 years old.


Question: What is the story behind the name, Yacht Club DJs?

Guy Chappell: My middle name is Yacht and Gaz's middle name is Club DJs, so the decision was simple.
