Gina Scriven, from innovative company Glass By Gina, says that fast food parties are fast forgotten and parents are wasting money on them when they could be giving their children a party to boast about for years to come with very little effort.

Kids party expert Gina Scriven said 'Craft parties were seeing a surge in popularity."
'We've seen everything from fast food outlets, jumpy castles and clowns to stretch limousines and make up parties – to the point where it's just too much for everyone," she said.

'But craft parties hark back to a time when children and adults enjoyed creating things together."
'And it's teaching kids valuable skills for life."
'Kids parties should be fun for both parents and children, rather than a competition."

'As a parent it's your responsibility to create great memories for your kids, not hand them over to a fast food outlet."
'To make matters worse there seems to be only a small variety of activities for children's parties, and these deplete in number the older the child becomes."
'Even to have the -lolly bag' at the end costs a small fortune, because it is no longer a case of just buying a bag of sweets and distributing between the number of children."
'You have to consider allergies and additives, so the cost can easily blow out to be seven to ten dollars per bag just for a few bits of stationary and stickers."

Ms Scriven said parents should consider the following when planning a party:
Consider it an opportunity for your children and their friends to express their creativity
Look for activities that will engage a child and make them concentrate
Check out the skill level of the person who is engaging your children for that period of time.
Go with your gut feeling, if their equipment is old and run down, or you are not getting value for your outlay, go elsewhere.
Food is of the least interest to the children, are you able to secure their safety for the period you are in charge?

'As a parent I have notice the increasing pressure of children to be educated, and creativity is being ignored."
'No matter what job our children grow up to do, there is an element of creativity required within it."
'I want to empower our children through giving them the freedom to create."

Mother of two Brenda Cooke from Rivervale used Gina's advice to create a fun and easy mosaic party for her daughter's ninth birthday.

'The kids were fully engaged for two hours, and they took home some wonderful pieces of art," said Mrs Cooke.

'The children learnt a skill that requires costly materials and tools that I am unable to provide, so I saved a lot of money and the kids can use that knowledge at any stage in their lives," she said

Ms Scriven's two hour craft parties include:
Jewellrey making
Mosaics
Suncatchers
Fused tiles
