THUMBS UP TO COMFORTERS!

It's official! Comforters are better for your baby to suck than their own thumb, according to research by the Academy of Paediatric Dentistry, America.

According to the research, although thumb sucking isn't necessarily harmful to your baby's development, it can cause teeth alignment problems later in life. What's more, the habit is much harder to break - throwing out a comforter is easy, but thumbs are a little more permanent!

Unfortunately, sucking is not preventable. Over 90% of newborns show some form of hand sucking by just two hours of age! It's one of a baby's most natural reflexes and a great way to calm your baby when they are tired, bored, hungry or just want some comfort.

But why are comforters any better than sucking a thumb? Comforters are softer and cause less damage to the teeth if sucked past the age of 2-4 years. The plastic rim provides some relief of the tension placed on the teeth and they are also easier to clean.

But with so many comforters on the market, how do you know which one to choose? This Tommee Tippee guide will make sure your baby has the best comforter to suit all their sucking needs:
  • Always make sure the comforter is Standards Australia accredited, like all comforters from Tommee Tippee. Look for the five tick logo if unsure
  • Make sure the shield is made from firm plastic with ventilation holes to increase air circulation and reduce choking hazards
  • Clean your comforter frequently until your baby is six months old
  • Always choose a shape your baby enjoys - you may have to test different shapes and sizes before you find the perfect fit
  • Never tie a comforter around your baby's neck or to their crib
