The Mighty Bras

The Mighty Bras

In the summer of 2003, a mob of mature Melbourne women threw caution, asthma inhalers and orthopedic inserts to the wind and formed a football (soccer) team to play in the lower division of the metropolitan league.

The Mighty Bras - as the Brunswick Zebras became known - have defied the odds and their old bones ever since to prove that, well, winning isn't everything.

Coach and author Paul Connolly has steered the Bras through their occasional triumphs and frequent trouble. His deft and delightful memoir is a suburban sports story about friendship, community and shared ideals. And testament that football is indeed a funny old game.

The cumulative age of The Mighty Bras players makes them the oldest women's football team in Australia.
World Cup 2010 in South Africa starts in June
With all the hype surrounding the World Cup and its highest paid stars, this is a football story which celebrates community and Donnas, rather than prima donnas.
Paul Connolly is a Melbourne writers whose feature stories and humour pieces have been published in Australia's leading newspapers and magazines. He lives in Brunswick with his partner, their two young daughters, and their lovable mongrel, Murray. He played football throughout his youth and the older he gets, the better he was. He has written two previous books: Sucking the Marrow Out of Life and The World's Weirdest Sports.
