A brilliant, innovative, reverently faithful graphic novel adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's jazz-age classic.
F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel 'The Great Gatsby' has captured the hearts and minds of readers for generations. Set in the glitter and decadence of 1920s New York, Max Perkins, in a letter to Fitzgerald on reading the original draft said: "The Novel is a wonder.... it has vitality to an extraordinary degree and glamour, and a great deal of underlying thought of unusual quality.... it is astonishing."
Nicki Greenberg's graphic adaptation took of The Great Gatsby took more than six years to complete. It is an innovative and breathtaking homage to F. Scott Fitzgerald's jazz-age classic that brings to life the glitter, the melancholy and the grand and crumpled dreams of Fitzgerald's unforgettable characters. Her throng of fantastical creatures play out the drama, the wry humour and the tragedy of the novel, faithful to Fitzgerald's plot, mood and characterisation.
Daisy is a complex character - charming, careless, morally compromised and disappointed. Her feather-light flightiness and air of luxury are conveyed by her white, fluffy round head, while her slender, elegant neck and hands suggest both seductive charm and vulnerability.
Gatsby is a self-made enigma, a mystery deepened by its contradictions. He is simultaneously heartbreakingly sincere and utterly fake, noble and corrup, glamorous and gauche. His form is inspired by the seahorse - a gorgeous, impossible looking animal that seems to have been put together from bits of other creatures.
Tom - everything about Tom's personality is overbearing, arrogant and brutal, as embodied in his big, hulking, hyper-masculine body and brutish face. he occupies more space than anyone else, suggesting substantial social and financial power.
