Laurie Lawrence was one of Australias most successful Olympic swimming coaches,with his unique style of motivation and guidance seeing his charges break records ina number of gold medal winning international performances in the 80s and early 90s.
He represented Australia as a swimming coach at three Commonwealth Games(1982, 1986 and 1990); and three Olympic Games (1984, 1988 and 1992). He hassince maintained his Olympic involvement as the official Team Motivator for theentire Australian Olympic Team (1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008).
In his own sporting life, Laurie overcame the challenge of having a single lung, andasthma, to become one of the Wallabies and tour NZ in 1964.
Today, he is a highly successful businessman, motivator and speaker. He operatesthe now famous Lawrence Learn to Swim School, which also specialises in teachingphysically disabled and speech and hearing impaired children.
Laurie is also a staunch activist regarding water safety and works with variousorganisations, including Government, to promote safe swimming messages andmethods to reduce the incidence of drowning, especially among children.
His special Kids Alive - Do the Five safe swimming programme for babies through tosix-year-olds is run nationally.
Laurie has won many awards during his career, including All Sports National Coachof the Year (1988), Australian Achievers Award (1989), Advance Australia Medal andQLD Father of the Year (1989). In 1996 he was also inducted into the InternationalSwimming Hall of Fame as an honour coach.
