Sidney Poitier has starred in more than 40 films, directed nine and written four. His landmark films include 'A Patch of Blue', 'Lilies of the Field', 'Guess Who's coming to Dinner', 'In the Heat of the Night' and 'To Sir, with love'. He was the first African-American actor to win the Academy Award for best actor. He is also the author of two autobiographies, This Life and The Measure of a Man.

He is married and has six daughters, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
