Interview with Tilly Bagshawe

How are you able to create such glamorous stories?

Tilly Bagshawe: I have always loved glamorous, escapist fiction as a reader, having grown up in the eighties, and writing it is even more fun than reading it. Obviously it all starts with imagination, but actually the inspiration for my characters and stories is all around, especially in Los Angeles and London where I spend most of my time, two very glamorous cities.

What inspired you to write Scandalous?

Tilly Bagshawe: I have always wanted to write a book with a Cambridge element to it. I also noticed that science has been having something of a renaissance at the moment, that it is becoming 'cooler' and getting more media coverage than it did, say, ten or twenty years ago. So I had an idea for my wicked, sexy scientist villain, Theo Dexter, and it all grew from there.

Can you tell us about how you create a character like Sasha Miller?

Tilly Bagshawe: Parts of Sasha's life are based on my own life - growing up in a little village in Sussex, going to Cambridge and then America to make her fortune. But she is also quite different from me, more driven, more obsessive. Like most of my characters she is an amalgam of real people and someone who walked into my head one day.

What is the best thing about writing stories about money, revenge, lust and scandals?

Tilly Bagshawe: I think life can easily become dull, monotonous and prosaic, and it's fun in fiction to be able to go a bit wild, to explore and create in ways that you can't really in life, or even in other literary genres. I'm not trying to write Shakespeare, but I want my readers to enjoy every second of my books and to feel happier because they read them. I certainly feel happier writing them, because there are no limits, no taboos.

Sasha Miller, like you attends Cambridge, was it easier to write about a place you knew and had been too?

Tilly Bagshawe: Yes, I think so. Especially if you have a strong reaction to a place, either positive or negative. I think that feeling and that familiarity does come through in your writing. Cambridge is somewhere that I love and miss, and I hope that that love comes across in Scandalous.
