Interview with Sarah Chatburn from Newcastle Tattoo Removal

Question: What is PicoSure?

Sarah Chatburn: PicoSure is a breakthrough in laser tattoo removal technology. It is the world's first and only picosecond aesthetic laser cleared by the FDA. Picosecond laser technology delivers the laser energy 100 times faster than traditional Q-Switched lasers making laser tattoo removal safer and more effective than ever before.

Question: What makes PicoSure different to other tattoo removal treatments?

Sarah Chatburn: The PicoSure laser achieves visibly clearer and ink free skin in significantly fewer treatment sessions than other tattoo removal treatments. There is minimal risk the skin surrounding the tattoo resulting in considerably fewer complications. PicoSure offers faster, safer results and unlike other tattoo removal treatments it is also effective on all tattoo colours including previously difficult to treat colours such as green and blue.

Question: How is PicoSure faster and more effective than previous tattoo removal machines?

Sarah Chatburn: Previous tattoo removal machines used a photothermal action or the heat of the laser energy to shatter tattoo ink resulting in greater risk to surrounding tissue and larger ink particles. By delivering the laser energy 100 times faster than previous tattoo removal machines the PicoSure uses a photomechanical action known as 'Pressure Wave" technology to target and shatter the tattoo ink into much small dust like particles and avoid unmarked tissue. The small particles are more easily eliminated by the body resulting in faster clearance of the tattoo.

Question: How many treatments are required for patients to achieve visibly clearer, ink free skin?

Sarah Chatburn: The PicoSure laser can completely remove tattoos in 1-5 treatment sessions, where as with traditional Q-switched lasers it can take 5-15 sessions. The reduced number of treatments means a significantly shorter overall treatment period making the PicoSure the treatment of choice amongst our clients.

Question: Can you talk us through how a typical tattoo is removed using PicoSure?

Sarah Chatburn: All of our clients have a consultation prior to treatment to ensure they are aware of what happens before during and after treatment. Following the consultation we take photos of the tattoo so as we can track its progression during treatment.

The skin is cooled using the Zimmer cooling system to reduce discomfort and cooling continues until each session is completed.

The tattoo is then traced with the laser beam and the laser energy passes through the skin and is absorbed by the tattoo ink. The rapid absorption of light energy causes the tattoo ink to break into tiny particles which can then be removed by the body's natural filtering system. Sessions are generally conducted 8 weeks apart.

Question: What is the pain like with PicoSure?

Sarah Chatburn: The sensation is similar to the snap of a hot rubber band on the skin. We use the Zimmer cooling system to cool the skin before and during treatment reducing discomfort and making the procedure relatively pain free. The majority of our clients tolerate the treatment well and do not require any additional anaesthesia.

Question: How does PicoSure maintain skin clarity when removing tattoos?
Sarah Chatburn: The PicoSure laser uses a 755nm wavelength which means there is very little if any absorption of melanin. Using a wavelength that reduces melanin absorption means the PicoSure can specifically target the tattoo ink leave the surrounding skin untouched.

Question: What are the most common tattoos you remove?

Sarah Chatburn: There are many reasons clients want tattoos removed and there is a vast array of tattoos that come through our doors. Many people simply find their tattoo does not reflect who they are anymore, where as other clients want their tattoo lightened so they can have it covered by something else. We most commonly see tattoos with the Southern Cross, Nordic stars and ex-partners names.
