SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium penguins will hold a morning tea on ice

The adorable Gentoo and King Penguins who call SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium home are preparing to give cancer the cold shoulder with their very own Biggest Morning Tea.

They may be swapping a hot cuppa for a cup of fish, but these penguins know that raising funds for cancer is snow laughing matter – which is why they've even set up their fundraising page for the community to get behind.

They've set a fundraising goal of $5,000, and all the cuteness of the morning tea will be live streamed on Facebook.

This year, participants are encouraged to host Australia's Biggest Morning Tea their way, whether it's at home with friends or family, a simple morning tea in the office with workmates, virtually – or on ice!

The official day for Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is Thursday 27 May, but supporters can hold their morning tea any time until the end of June.

Cancer Council NSW Campaigns Unit Manager Jennifer Birks said there's never been a more important time to support Australia's Biggest Morning Tea.

"This year we encourage the community to host or attend an Australia's Biggest Morning Tea as a way of reconnecting with their community, following the social isolation the pandemic brought," Ms Birks said.

Ms Birks said Cancer Council is fortunate to receive support from the community through events like Australia's Biggest Morning Tea and hopes this year's fundraiser lifts the nation's spirits.

"Since Australia's Biggest Morning Tea began in 1994, millions of Australians have come together over a cuppa and a bite to eat in support of those affected by cancer," she said.

"This generosity enables us to continue our work in cancer research, prevention programs, advocacy and support services."

Laura Simmons, Head Curator at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium said they were excited to partner with Cancer Council for the event.

"Our penguins are such a beloved part of SEA LIFE Sydney. They all have so much personality, we know they'll love getting involved in Biggest Morning Tea. In line with the theme of participants hosting a morning tea 'their way' this year – I hope that the morning tea on the ice with our beautiful colony of penguins encourages people to think differently and get creative for this important cause".

This year, Cancer Council hopes to recruit over 20,000 generous morning tea hosts and raise over $7 million nationally to help all affected by cancer right across Australia. All donations fund Cancer Council's life-saving research, prevention, programs, advocacy and support services.
