MS Walk and Fun Run

MS Walk and Fun Run

On Sunday, June 2nd get out from under the doona, pull on your runners and take part in the MS Walk and Fun Run at Albert Park Lake.

The MS Walk and Fun run is an enjoyable, healthy way to join family, friends and thousands of other enthusiastic supporters and in doing so you can help us kiss goodbye to MS, a devastating neurological condition which affects more than 23,000 Australians.

The event caters for people of all ages and fitness levels with two different course lengths - 5km and 10km. Both the Walk and Fun Run set off from Palms Lawn on the shores of Albert Park Lake and along the way enjoy a scenic route with views of the Melbourne city skyline. Keep your energy up at our morning tea and water stops and watch out for roving entertainers along the way. Then it's back to Palms Lawn to replenish and relax with food, music and entertainment for the whole family. The MS Walk and Fun Run route is wheelchair, pram and stroller friendly.

For those who want to complete the course at a faster pace, there is the 5km or 10km Fun Run. Challenge yourself to reach your personal best with our professional chip timing system.

You can join as an individual or get a team of family and friends together. Get into the spirit of the day by wearing red or get creative and dress up in a fun costume of your choice for a chance to win a prize.

'The MS Walk and Fun Run is an iconic event of the MS calendar and it's a great opportunity for the entire MS community to come together," said Robyn Hunter, CEO of MS Australia - ACT/NSW/VIC.

'The event also marks the end of the national Kiss Goodbye to MS campaign which culminates in World MS Day on May 29. So I encourage everyone to get involved, to help us build awareness of MS and raise vital funds for the provision of care and support for people living with MS while the search for a cure continues."

The event is held simultaneously in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne and almost 10,000 people take part in the three cities. Since the first event in 1989, MS Walk and Fun Run participants have raised millions of dollars to fund essential services and support for the people living with MS.

About Multiple Sclerosis:
MS is a chronic and often debilitating disease which affects more than 23,000 Australians.
MS randomly attacks the central nervous system, stopping the brain communicating with the rest of the body. The consequences can include extreme fatigue and chronic pain, vision, cognitive, continence and mobility issues, right through to total and permanent disability.
MS is a lifelong disease for which there is no known cause or cure.
Diagnosis of MS is typically between 20 and 40 years of age. Three quarters of people living with MS are women.
An additional 1,000 Australians are diagnosed with MS every year, equating to approximately four people every working day.
No two cases of MS are identical. The visible and hidden symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from person to person and from time to time in the same person.
MS is estimated to cost Australia over $1 billion each year.
50-80% of people with MS cease to work full-time within 10 years of diagnosis.
