The Five Step Program for Getting Through Menopause

Some women breeze through menopause without realizing 'the change' is upon them, others are not so lucky. Here are some ways to make the journey easier:
    1. Understand that menopause is a natural transition, just as puberty was. Fortunately, with a few more years under your belt since puberty, you're in a better position to ride out the storm of hormonal upheavals. Realise this is a time of change, not just with your body, but also with your life.

    2. Find a good doctor. Many general practitioners (GPs) specialize in women's health. Or find an understanding gynaecologist. Make sure that you have good two-way communication; that your doctor listens to you and you feel comfortable with the advice they give you.

    3. Re-evaluate your lifestyle. Your body is becoming less forgiving now and is going to let you know if you continue to engage in those bad habits you enjoyed in the past. You need to eat healthy food, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. Maintaining a healthy weight can help you avoid a variety of serious medical conditions.

    4. Get an annual medical check-up. Track any symptoms you may have (both physical and psychological) and discuss them with your doctor or gynaecologist.

    5. Be patient with yourself. Find ways to relax and reduce your stress. Stress intensifies many menopausal symptoms and lowers your body's immunity to disease. Take time out for yourself to visit with friends, begin a yoga class, take a walk or perform community service - just do something that makes you feel good about yourself.
