Melbourne's favourite winter event, Lightscape

Melbourne's favourite winter event, Lightscape, is returning to transform the Botanic Gardens after dark with a reimagined 2.2 km trail and brand-new installations from 14 June 2024.

Lightscape 2024 will include all-new light installations like the immersive Submergence, where audiences move through thousands of suspended lights as the installation shifts and changes colour in response to their movement.

Audiences will also marvel at Lili by French artistic studio TILT, making its Australian debut next year. Lili sees a series of abstract, three-meter tall, illuminated flowers that will captivate the attention of kids and adults alike.

The third annual Lightscape will also see the return of the beloved Winter Cathedral and fan-favourite Laser Garden at Fern Gully while the welcome zone will continue to serve delicious food along with tasty treats on the trail.

Lightscape promises to be an unmissable spectacle, so make it a new tradition with family and friends. There's no better way to celebrate winter in Melbourne!

Following enormous successes in the UK and US, Lightscape, created in partnership with Sony Music Entertainment Australia, made its debut in Melbourne in 2022 and was an overwhelming success, quickly becoming a highlight of Melbourne's winter cultural calendar.

The event was developed at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in the UK 12 years ago and has been an overwhelming success since, with more than two million people experiencing the illuminated trails at various venues across the world last season.

"We are thrilled to see Lightscape returning to Melbourne Gardens for its third year. The Gardens provide an exquisite canvas for us to create a magical world of light, nature and wonder.

Everywhere I go in Victoria, people of all ages tell me what an overwhelmingly positive, heartwarming and joyful experience it is…so we've challenged ourselves to push the boundaries of creativity and excite everyone again this coming year," said David Harland, Director and Chief Executive, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

"In 2024 we have a few surprises up our sleeve as we build on the experience to make it exhilarating for both returning and first-time visitors," he added.

Joni Marks, Chief Development Director, RGL (Raymond Gubbay Limited), a division of Sony Music Entertainment said "We are delighted to be returning to Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne with Lightscape. Melbourne has one of the finest botanic gardens in the world and working alongside our production partners, Culture Creative, we are excited to present the Gardens in a completely new way for 2024."
