Mei Lai Wedding Day
With tales spun between two homes in the desert and the city, Mei La i Swan is taking her place amongst the nation's chanteuses for her finely crafted avant-indie-pop, built on cello, loops, multi-instrumentalism, and the occasional electronica.
Wedding Day is the first taste from her forthcoming debut album due for release later this year. Produced by Jake Savona (Mista Savona), it is a wry take on the heady rush of falling in love that plunges you into the blind belief of the fairytale wedding, that unfortunately lacks the fairytale ending… Pulsating electro beats, with a dancehall breakdown and changes that complement its sardonic lyrics, Wedding Day pulls on the heartstrings in quite a different way.
Mei Lai cut her musical teeth as Celtic fusion band Lothlorien's, violinist and as a session musician with acclaimed Melbourne artists such as Ned Collette, Carl Pannuzzo, and Love Outside Andromeda. She as performed on the international stage with Chamber Made Opera and occasionally composed for theatre, circus and film.
True to her varied approach to life and creativity, Mei L ai is currently recording her debut album with a mix of Melbourne's most talented electro-acoustic producers including Jake Savona, Damien Charles (The Red Eyes), The Nomad, and Soup (Miso). Drawing from these different producers who are well-versed in electronic and acoustic production, and a range of genres such as, dancehall, reggae, dub, hip hop and electro, Mei Lai undertook the album recording as a "great experiment", which has captured amazing results.
Wedding Day will be a Digital-only release through Vitamin Records February 8th, 2010
