New research revealed has found that more than 2 million Aussies have taken a 'sickie' from work - just to spend the day at home in bed snuggled under a doona drinking a coffee.
In a mission to champion Australians' love for 'the great indoors' and to give people the break from work they clearly need, Moccona Barista Reserve is launching Australia's first-ever 'National Doona Day' on the third Monday in June – one of the most miserable Mondays of the year.
Encouraging Aussies to work from the comfort of home, or even better, to take the day off to relax, 'National Doona Day' encourages Aussies to enjoy more time under the doona having a well-earned freshly brewed tasting coffee – and less time standing in café queues, braving the colder weather.
The Moccona 'Barista Barometer' study surveyed over 1,000 Aussies to reveal their household habits and coffee quirks. A key finding found the country is frittering away cash on café coffee with Aussie coffee drinkers spending an average of $9.50 per week - the equivalent of an astonishing $6.1 billion a year! Yet over half of the country (56%) prefers instant coffee which they can enjoy in the comfort of their own home.
The 'solo cup' phenomenon is more popular than ever with nearly half of Aussies (47%) saying they would prefer their own company for a coffee to make it more enjoyable. The survey also revealed some quirkier habits - with 725,00 Aussies noting their favourite spot to enjoy a cup of coffee was in the bathtub!
When asked which celebrity they would most like to share a coffee with under the doona, movie star Chris Hemsworth topped the male list followed closely by much-loved Australian actor and TV presenter, Luke Jacobz. To answer the nation's wishes, Jacobz has been tasked to launch 'National Doona Day', encouraging Aussies to recharge batteries this winter with a cup of coffee and penning an open letter to bosses across the country to participate.
Jacobz said: "If I can go into my kitchen to make a coffee without needing to worry about what my hair looks like, or just lounge about and chill at home, then it's a winning start to the day for me. As a nation that loves our coffee and "me time" (whenever we can get it!), National Doona Day is the perfect initiative to bring these two things together, so I am thrilled to be working with Moccona Barista Reserve on this Australian-first!"
Donna Mulholland, ANZ Marketing Director, at Moccona said: "Our research shows that Aussies treasure a coffee moment for themselves at home. For those looking to take their at-home coffee experience to the next level, Moccona Barista Reserve, with its freshly brewed coffee taste, is all the Barista you need, whether you are in the kitchen, bed - or even the bathtub!"

Question: Are you surprised that more than 2 million Aussies have taken a sickie from work – just to spend the day at home snuggled under a doona drinking a coffee?
Luke Jacobz: With the current dismal weather - not really! It's cold and everyone has been working for 6 months solid so people naturally need a break. The great thing about National Doona Day was that it gave people the proper way to take a rest day without feeling guilty, so they got permission from their boss to stay snuggled up at home. At the end of the day, the more rested everyone is the more productive they will be anyway!
Question: How does it feel to know Australians would like to share a coffee with you?
Luke Jacobz: It's very flattering. I didn't quite beat Chris Hemsworth, but I will take second best to him!
