The Liver Cleansing Diet

Didn't this one hit us like a tornado. The accompanying book was a best seller within days for American medico Sandra Cabot. It outlined how to cleanse the liver following an 8-week plan.

Dr Cabot asserted that as the liver is the body's hardest working organ and regulates your metabolism, if it is cleansed and free of toxins it is able to regulate your metabolism more effectively, thus burn fat at a faster rate. Great......in theory.

The diet also claimed to alleviate digestive problems and ailments such as migraines, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies as well as delay the aging process.

In order to achieve a cleansed liver and a faster metabolism, Dr Cabot says to drink copious amounts of filtered water, completely cut out alcohol, sugar, caffeine and dairy products, and only consume small amounts of fat (good fats), artificial chemicals, sweeteners and colorings.

She advises to eat lots of fruit and veg and consume a diverse range of proteins from grains, nuts and seafood - but try and limit protein intake from meat and poultry.

The diet is certainly well-meaning, but it also common sense. If one applies these principals to their health and wellbeing plan (diet) they will lose weight.

It makes nutritional sense that to lose weight and maintain wellbeing you simply have to cut down on sugar, bad fats and increase your intake of fruit and veg - I have been professing this from day one. see my three point plan above!

Here is a sample of what one should eat for dinner whilst on the liver cleansing diet. It comes with a warning of not to have three courses as it will overwork the liver, but accompany the meal with a raw salad.

In fact, all meals are very light, so as well as limiting fat intake, your daily calorie is reduced too. So it is quite obvious that weight will be shed and it has little to do with a fast metabolism due to a cleansed liver, it simply means you are using more than you are consuming.

That, folks is the key to weight loss!

Here is what you could eat tonight is you were on the Liver Cleansing Diet.
Steamed fish with ginger and shallots, Rice with Egg and Vegetables, Vegetable ratatouille with brown rice and garden salad with Water.
