Hamilton Island is situated in the heart of the Whitsundays and is one of the 74 tropical islands that lie between the Queensland Coast and The Great Barrier Reef. The island spans over 750 hectares and is 4.5 km long and 3 km wide.

HISTORY

Geologically the Whitsunday Islands are all drowned mountains. Prior to the Ice Age they were in fact connected to the mainland but once the polar caps melted, the valleys became drowned between the mountains creating a network of 74 islands. Only 7 have resort facilities, the remainder forms part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

CLIMATE

Hamilton Island lies on the same tropical latitude as Honolulu in the Northern Hemisphere and Mauritius and has a year round warm tropical climate with an average temperature of 27.4 degrees celsius. Heavenly!

ACTIVITIES

There is something for everyone to enjoy on Hamilton Island with over 40 daily activities to select from. These activities range from snorkelling, reef fishing and sailboard riding to tennis, wire flying, go carting, gymnasium, joy flights, squash and golf. Swimming, bush walking and non-motorised swimming activities can all be enjoyed for free.

If water activities don't tickle your fancy, then you might want to visit the Hamilton Island Mountain Top Fauna Park where you can grab an up close look at native koalas, kangaroos, emus, wombats and a variety of birdlife.

You can also enjoy the walking trails or venture out to one of the delightfully secret destinations including Coral Cove and the appropriately titled Escape Beach.

If shopping is your passion then you can indulge until your hearts content at more than 20 boutiques included on the island! Give your credit card a workout at the wonderful specialty, fashion and general stores on offer!

And if you are travelling with children, the Hamilton Island Clownfish Club hosts a range of activities and excursions for kids of all ages to participate in. Parents can relax knowing that their children are enjoying safe, supervised age-related adventures including arts and crafts, beachcombing, snorkelling, hiking, fishing, mini golf and pool games.
