Get the Look: Natural Flowing Curls
The hottest look of the season is natural flowing curls as seen by Gwyneth Paltrow at the Grammy's, Angelina Jolie at the Academy Awards and by Kate Hudson at the People's Choice Awards.
With a who's who list of superstar clients including the likes of Kate Hudson, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow, David Babaii has made his mark on the fashion world by creating hairstyles that are natural, unique, free-flowing, and full of an untamed spirit. Named by Vogue as 'the King of Curl', David explains how to achieve a romantic cascade of curls, with hair of all lengths:
Spot the trend:
David Babaii dictates the on-point trends we're seeing on celebrities and on the runway- always an influence on hair fashion. "My recent cover of Vanity Fair with Angelina Jolie is a big hair statement," explains Babaii. "Her hair is full of volume and feminity. After all, what woman doesn't want big hair every now and then?" Another thing dominating the curly world is textured, beachy waves. "Loose, beachy waves are the new generation of curls!" he exclaims.
Short and Sweet:
"If your hair is short and curly, most likely you can allow it to air-dry," notes the professional. Add a texturising spray for volume and then use a bit of sculpting clay to define. "To do this place a small amount of product in your palm, warm between both palms and gently sculpt your curls." The product helps coat each strand, allowing spirals to maintain their shape all day.
Long Locks:
If your tresses are medium to long and you're seeking sassy spirals, you should start by diffusing your hair. "By not using a diffuser, your hair blows out of control causing your curls to go straighter," notes Babaii. "A diffuser allows curls to dry with no stress." Use texturising spray and volumiser for lift at the roots before drying. "While drying with a diffuser, dry sections one at a time by gently scrunching curls," instructs Babaii. For m ore control, try adding extra product once hair is dry.
Have not want not:
"Allow your hair's natural state to dictate the texturising tress look you choose. For example, if you have fine, straight hair, maybe a curly coif isn't for you! "I honestly can't say it's impossible, but it's close," says Babaii. "If you have stubborn, stick-straight hair, getting curly hair can be done, but it would take hours- plus no promises on how long it would hold." Babaii's belief is a logical one: "My motto is to work with your hair an dnot against it."
David's tips on how to achieve curls like Kate Hudson:
For Kate's trademark curls, it's all about four signature stages: drying, sectioning, curling and styling.
To get started, I have Kate shampoo and condition her hair with one of my cleansing duos. We love to alternate between the Hydrating and Amplifying sets so her hair is always a perfect balance. You can even mix them together like I do to achieve the best of both worlds. Plus, remember my motto: rinse, rinse, rinse.
Next, I spray her entire head with David Babii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray and scrunch the product into her hair. This gives just the right amount of texture and movement.
I always rough dry her gorgeous blondeness using my hands, moving her hair in various directions. Once dry, I section the hair into three different parts: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. This is vital because you need to have constant control over the hair at all times. I use a 1 ½ sized ceramic curling iron to create her Bohemian Beach Waves.
To finish styling, I take small 'V' shaped strands and wrap them around the outside or inside of the barrel, leaving the ends free. Then, I run my fingers up the partially curled strand to get dramatic, wild finish.
For additional lift or volume at the scalp area, I use David Babaii for WildAid Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier.
To complete Kate's look, I spray David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray. Sometimes if I really want a truly dramatic result I have her flip her head down and over. (When she looks in the mirror, her hair is amazing!)
