Food Waste Recycling

Waste Not

A handful of local councils across Victoria have introduced a food and green waste recycling service where household food scraps can be disposed of in the traditional green waste (gardening) bin.

Food waste recycling and home composting are two of the best ways to reduce waste going into landfill. Bayside Council are one of the local Councils introducing the new system, in July, to tackle the war on food waste which they believe accounts for 50% of the total household waste.

The new Food and Green Waste Bin accepts:
Fruit and vegetable scraps,
Egg shells,
Coffee grounds and loose leaf tea,
Meat scraps and bones,
Seafood including shells,
Used paper, paper towels and tissues,
Dairy leftovers,
Bread, pasta, cereal and rice and, Weeds, flowers, grass and garden prunings.

Does your Council accept food scraps in your green waste bins? If not, email them today and ask 'why not?' – I just did!
