Interview with tyDi

Question: What should we expect from the 2014 Homecoming Tour?

tyDi: A whole lot of my new original music! My new album 'ReDefined' is coming out in September so I'm starting to play them out in clubs. 90% of my sets are my own original songs, remixes or edits. I'm also a lot more diverse stylistically than I used to be, I like to keep everyone guessing what's going to be next.

Question: What are you looking forward to most about the 2014 Homecoming Tour?

tyDi: Well mainly I just miss Australia a lot - I spent the first 7 years of my DJ career touring Australia, now that I live in LA I've been really missing the whole Australian club circuit. I can't wait to come back with my brand new music and see how my fellow Australian's react to it. A few of the venues I'm playing at have a special place in my heart because I've been to them so many times, I know that coming back will be a great feeling.

Question: What music/artists do you listen to when you are not playing your own?

tyDi: Lately a lot of Gesaffelstein, his music is so dark and warped. It's really cool! One of his songs called 'Destinations' inspired some of my new work that's on my soundcloud page. Also I listen bands probably more than I do EDM - On my upcoming album of collaborated with a band on nearly every song.

Question: What's next? Tour/Album/Single?

tyDi: The new single 'Stay' is out now, it's been getting crazy radio play over here in America so that's been great for my live shows. The next thing is my album which is set to drop in September.

Question: Was there a moment you contemplated throwing in the towel?

tyDi: Yeah there was, but not because things were going badly - actually the opposite. I was living in Australia but the demand for my shows was growing more and more overseas. I was literally flying to LA from Brisbane every second week and cramming 10 shows into a two week tour, then flying home and touring Australia only to pack up and leave for another country a few days later. All of this whilst writing a new album and trying to maintain a healthy relationship with my girlfriend at the time. I completely burned out. I started falling apart on plane flights, getting two hours sleep a night because of jet lag and doubting if I even liked my own music. So for a short moment I just thought "maybe I should be satisfied now?, am I enjoying this as much as I used to?"... It was then I realised that I had to pack up and move to LA, I had to sacrifice my relationship, my friends and family and my home for a new life in a new country. Since being here I haven't had to do long haul flights every week, just monthly. And now I'm around all the artists who I work with. I'm in a much better place than I ever was and I don't think I could be any happier with the new album that's coming out.

Question: Do you prefer performing live or recording?

tyDi: It's kind of hard to compare really, writing music is when I'm feeling the most artistic and that's where my heart is... but playing live is like a drug, it's a rush to see all those people going crazy. I don't think I could choose one.

Question: What/who was your inspiration to go into the music industry?

tyDi: BT. I always adored his music, now we are good friends and I produce a lot of music with him!

Question: What is the biggest challenge you have faced along the way to your musical success?

tyDi: Finding the time to make everything happen. My tour schedule is getting close to 180 shows a year, it's absolutely insane. Fitting all that in while writing music is tiring, but it's the only thing that I'm truly passionate for.

Question: What's a typical day like?

tyDi: Wake up in a strange hotel, meet the driver, get to the airport, fly to a new city, play a show, play another show, go to hotel, get 4 hours sleep, wake up fly to another city....repeat. Then studio on the days off!

Question: What has been your favourite part of becoming a music artist?
tyDi: Making people happy with something I am truly passionate about. Nothing compares.

Question: If you could collaborate with another artist, who would it be?

tyDi: The vocalist from Taking Back Sunday!
