The persistent problem of playground head lice is an issue that affected the majority of us during childhood and continues to be prevalent amongst children and even adults today. Head lice, or 'nits' as they are commonly referred to are small, wingless insects that live, breed and feed on the human scalp. To assist parents in keeping their little one's locks lice-free and in tip-top condition, the team at Christiane's Hair Design, New South Wales' largest salon chain are offering mums and dads their best advice.

"Lice can crawl very quickly from one head to the other, so primary aged children playing together at school are the most likely to fall victim and, if left untreated, can then pass the lice on to other family members," says Julieann McGuiness, Area Manager at Christiane's Hair Design with over forty years industry experience. "And contrary to popular belief, head lice are not selective! Clean hair, dirty hair, long or short hair, lice are happy on any head."

"Parents can detect head lice by looking out for kids scratching their scalps and combing conditioner-coated hair with a lice comb, checking the comb for nits," says Julieann.

Christiane's recommend that head lice are treated with the Eco Kid Lice Bomb, a 100% naturally derived botanical complex of pure plant oils and essences that is available to purchase from any Christiane's salon. "A purely organic product, the non-toxic Eco Kid Lice Bomb contains no chemical ingredients or nasties and best of all, has a pleasant odour!" says Julieann. "For sensitive scalps, the product can be mixed with olive oil. It leaves the hair feeling soft and unlike many other products on the market, it doesn't dry the hair out".

"When it comes to head lice, many parents make the mistake of assuming that once the live lice are removed they can sit back and let out a sigh of relief. This is not the case; the un-hatched eggs must also be dealt with to prevent further breeding," explains Julieann. "Once a thin layer of the treatment is covering the entire scalp, parents should use a fine toothed comb to comb through the hair from root to tip, which is an effective way to catch lice eggs and any lice escaping the treatment by running up the shaft of the hair".

Once a child's hair is free from lice, parents can prevent their return by introducing an anti-lice product in to their children's daily hair care routine. "Using a preventative treatment such as Eco Kid Daily Shampoo not only cleanses deeply but also makes hair unattractive to head lice," says Julieann. "This gives mums and dads peace of mind when sending their little ones to school, children's parties or sleepovers, especially during the warmer months when the probability of head lice exposure increases".

"Lice aside, parents must also remember that their kid's hair care routine is just as important as their own. Hair needs to be washed regularly and combed whilst a conditioner is coating the hair - the best way to avoid tangles and tears!"

Christiane's Hair Design prides itself on creating a relaxed, family-friendly environment in all 29 of its salons. "At Christiane's, we understand that getting a hair cut can be a daunting experience for many children," says Peter Warbrick, CEO of Christiane's Hair Design. "All of our miniature clients receive a treat at the end of their service and in many of our salons; we have kid's corners with story books and toys".

The entire Eco Kid hair care range is available at any Christiane's Hair Design salon, retailing from $18.95 for the Daily Shampoo 250ml through to $23.95 for the Lice Bomb 60ml which comes with a lice comb.
