Chiropractic Care for Children

Chiropractic Care for Children < /h3>Pregnancy
Chiropractic can be helpful during all stages of pregnancy. This period of rapid development hormonal changes, the laxity of connective ligaments and shifting weight bearing structures, may cause pregnant women to experience low back pain. As the centre of gravity changes, so does the stress to the spine. Beside helping to relieve the discomfort, many expectant mothers experience that Chiropractic helps normalise nerve system function. This is an important component to overall good health. Your Chiropractor will take special precautions with your during your pregnancy. Modifications to the table of adjusting techniques is made during each stage of your pregnancy.

Delivery and the Birth Process
The benefits of Chiropractic care may also be noticed during delivery. Many chiropractic clients report that their deliveries were faster and more comfortable than deliveries pervious to chiropractic care. The birth process, even under natural and controlled conditions, is potentially traumatic and can stress a still developing spine. During the pushing stages of labour, the spine, particularly the neck may be pushed down the birth canal. As the baby is compressed, the small bones in the neck may be pushed out of natural alignment and cause nerve interference. The neurological disturbance is called a vertebral subluxation. Chiropractors are the only health care providers trained to locate the correct vertebral subluxation.

Newborns and Toddlers
Colic, unexplained crying, poor appetitive, breathing problems, allergic reactions can often be traced to nerve system dysfunctions caused by malfunctioning spine. Poor head support because of weaker muscles, followed by those stumbles and falls, which occur when learning to crawl, and those first few steps toddlers make, are good time to consider a chiropractic check. If neglected, the bump and falls during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. This can set the stage for curvature of the spine (Scoliosis), 'growing pains' or weakened immune system response.

Young Children
Throughout life, falls, injuries and stress commonly cause subluxations. Young children may fall down several times a day- a common occurrence- that along with contact sustained in sport activities, may cause the vertebra to move out of their natural alignment. By having subluxations corrected throughout childhood, adolescence, and then as an adult, you and your family have a better opportunity to be as healthy as possible.

Conditions such as headaches, cold back and neck pain, ear infections, colic, bed wetting, hyperactivity, decreased immune response, breathing difficulties and other illnesses may result. Chiropractic adjusting techniques are modified to fit a child's size, weight and unique spinal problems. Parents have often reported that their children seem healthier than other children their age who do not have chiropractic care. Colic
Chiropractors find that infantile colic may be associated with poor spinal functions (Subluxations), arising from physical stresses to the infant's spine during birth, or inappropriate handling during the early weeks of life. Modern obstetric practices, such as birthing the babies with the mother lying on her back, the use of forceps, suction, induction and epidurals may subject the infant to significant trauma. Such stresses may lead to subluxations in the infant causing nerve interference. This nerve interference may upset the function of the gastrointestinal system resulting in pain and colic. Correction of spinal stress and the relief of nerve interference may explain the positive effect Chiropractors have on infantile colic. A study in Denmark in 1989 carried out by a chiropractor and a medical practitioner reported that in 94% of cases of colic, a successful result was obtained following a two week period of care. This research confirms the results of other studies and observations of the effectiveness of chiropractic.

What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a natural approach to health that is based on the relationship between the nerve system and the proper function of the body, tissues and organs. Chiropractors work with the nerve system. Every function of your body, including cells, tissues and organs, is under control of your brain through your nerve system. Your brain is protected by your skull. The vital communication pathway of the spinal cord is covered by 24 moving bones of the spinal column. The nerves leave the spinal column through the openings between the moveable spinal bones called vertebrae. When through injury, postural problems or stress, the vertebrae becomes misaligned; they can interfere with normal function of these nerves. This misalignment is called a Vertebral Subluxation. Chiropractors are specialists in the detection, reduction and prevention of the nerve system interferences known as subluxations.
