Australians need their work mates to do their best work according to a survey of 2,403 people by human resource giant, Talent2. Ask them to work alone is like putting them in solitary confinement and leaves most of them cold, bored and inclined to waste the day.
A massive 88.6% of Aussies say working in a team is far more beneficial than trying to go it alone and 83% say they much prefer to bounce off their mates. But Gen Y are more likely to want to be autonomous with 77% saying they need the uplift from their mates and 23% saying they get much more done if they work on their own. 84% of Gen Xers and 85% of Baby Boomers agree.
"Males are more into working as a team than their female counterparts", according to Craig Sneesby of Talent2 and this is perhaps due to the sporting influence.
"People like to see what their colleagues are doing, they like the constant challenges and the variety teamwork poses, and the great Aussie ethos of watching out for your mates is still very prevalent in the workplace. And for the employer, teamwork has practical benefits. Its a talent to be able to meld together differing skill sets and skill levels but the benefits outweigh the challenges. Employers sometimes need to act as coaches in order to get the team working as one. Having the right people on the front row, figuring out who is best suited for defence and who kicks the goals is a must in todays managerial mindset."
