Interview with Amie Skinner
Question: What made you decide to give up your career in advertising?PR and become a pilates instructor?
Amie Skinner: Having always had an interest in both physical wellbeing and sports I am still baffled as to why I chose to do my degree in PR. Alongside doing my degree I also enrolled on various health and fitness courses and worked part time in gyms and teaching classes. After just a short stint of working in PR in London, I realised that it really wasn't for me and decided to embark on a full time career in the health and fitness industry. Career I have really passion and flare for.
Question: What is pilates?
Amie Skinner: Pilates can have different meaning and purpose to different people. It can be practiced for remedial reasons, as part of a sports training program, to improve posture, as part of a balanced exercise regime and for fitness.
It essentially works to strengthen the core muscles of the body giving you deep, underlying supple strength and flexibility as well as keeping the body mechanically balanced.
Having a strong, supple core will allow for real strength to be developed by the global muscles of the body. This creates a feeling of well being and helps creates positive body aesthetics as well as helping to prevent both minor and major injuries.
Question: What do you enjoy most about pilates?
Amie Skinner: I love the way it creates a feeling of being lengthened, lean and strong yet still feminine. It gives my muscles tone and definition like no other form of exercise. And really does help to tuck and nip all those bits we love to hate.
It also increases your body awareness, demands mental strength, patience and concentration. It teaches you to be in tune with your body, the way it moves and where your physical strengths and weaknesses are. I find this to be quite empowering and give you a sense of being in control of your body.
Question: Can you explain the difference between KX Pilates and normal pilates classes?
Amie Skinner: KX Pilates is a brilliant, dynamic fusion of Pilates with intense strength and flexibility training. Combining all these disciplines with each exercise whilst using a Pilates Reformer creates a very demanding workout, increasing your heart rates and making you sweat.
Its rev's up your metabolism and is great for weight loss and body sculpting. Creating quicker results than normal Pilates and giving you a well balanced workout. For those of us who are 'time poor' it is a very time efficient workout giving you cardio, strength and Pilates training in one 50 minute blast.
Question: Which do you think is better a pilates machine classes, or the matt classes?
Amie Skinner: I believe that machine Pilates is better. It is suitable for all ages and levels and truly makes you feel as if you have had a beneficial and focused workout.
Question: How many calories does the average pilates class burn?
Amie Skinner: Calorie expenditure will vary from person to person as it is dependent upon body weight, muscle mass and fitness levels. But on average, 400-600 calories per class.
Question: What results can be achieved from pilates?
Amie Skinner: A strong, lean, flexible and balanced body. As well as a sense of well being and increased body confidence.
Question: What tips do you have for busy people who find it tough to fit exercising into their schedule?
Amie Skinner: Do KX Pilates! It is an addictive time efficient, results driven 50minute workout. We run classes from 6am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 9am till 2pm on Saturdays and 10am till 2pm on Sundays. We also offer 1-2-1 and 2-2-1 training so there really is are classes and times to suit all.
Question: Why do you think celebrities such as Ben Stiller, Gwenyth Paltrow, Liz Hurley, and Claudia Schiffer all do pilates?
Amie Skinner: Pilates is a well established exercise discipline which offers a holistic workout. Its ongoing and growing popularity and modern day developments and interpretations are testament to its credibility as an exercise discipline.
Its variety and versatility also means that it is virtually impossible to get bored of and the results are ongoing. Every class brings a new challenge and realisation about yourself. This makes it more than just a fad and a trusted discipline which people perceive as an essential part of a well balance exercise routine and healthy lifestyle.
